Yes, another what camera thread - want better zoom.......??
Discussion
To the PH photo gurus.....
I am happy with the couple of point and shoot cameras that we have in the family, but at a recent social gathering I had a play with a friends digital SLR.
So, with a limited budget I've been looking at what could give me a much better zoom capability and retain the point and shoot convenience. So the two options I have found are:
18-55 & 55-200

or,
18-200

My wife prefers the second option so we don't have to swap lenses - I must admit, that also appeals to me
The type of shots are simply family stuff, kids playing in the garden, weekends away, holidays, etc. I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination call myself an enthusiast so wouldn't take photos as a hobby, just for our own memories.
So, for £400 and that sort of zoom capability, which one, or what other camera & lenses would you buy.....??

Wow, that's cheap, I thought you're asking just about the lenses
On the other side - neither the lenses nor the cameras are amazing, for much less you could get a very very good compact like Panasonic Lumix TZ8 with similar range (12x optical zoom). Just think do you really want an SLR with all its weight, size etc or is it just zoom that you're after.

Any other opinions on this from the daytime folk?
I've seen a comment on another thread about the Canon 55-250 lens. Should I be getting an entry DSLR and sticking something like that on as the main use lens?
Depends! I would say that 55mm is too long for general purpose, but it depends what you want to do with it. I think you cover the best options in your first post, and if convenience is what you're after, then the 18-200mm would appear to be the one, at least for now. My preferred combination before things got serious was 18-70mm and 70-300mm.I've seen a comment on another thread about the Canon 55-250 lens. The great thing about DSLR photography is that you can buy and sell bits as your hobby grows. So get the lens you think suits you best for now, and if in a years time you discover you want more/different, just sell it on eBay etc and buy the next thing up.
I thnk that as this would be your first DSLR you'll be mostly taken up with grasping the rudiments of 'real' photography (as opposed to Auto/Point/Shoot) and learning about image processing. There's a bit of a learning step from compact to DSLR.
