To the PH photo gurus.....

I am happy with the couple of point and shoot cameras that we have in the family, but at a recent social gathering I had a play with a friends digital SLR.

So, with a limited budget I've been looking at what could give me a much better zoom capability and retain the point and shoot convenience. So the two options I have found are:

18-55 & 55-200
http://www.jacobsdigital.co.uk/index.php?target=pr...

or,

18-200
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sony-alpha-a38...

My wife prefers the second option so we don't have to swap lenses - I must admit, that also appeals to me boxedin

The type of shots are simply family stuff, kids playing in the garden, weekends away, holidays, etc. I wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination call myself an enthusiast so wouldn't take photos as a hobby, just for our own memories.

So, for £400 and that sort of zoom capability, which one, or what other camera & lenses would you buy.....?? smile

GF1? - Over £400 for just a body is not an option on my budget.

TZ8 looks good, but I should throw in that we'd like to do a Safari one day....... hehesorry that's been thrown in from the sofa...

Any other opinions on this from the daytime folk?

I've seen a comment on another thread about the Canon 55-250 lens. Should I be getting an entry DSLR and sticking something like that on as the main use lens?
