seem to be having difficulty at the pump... whenever I try to fill the tank, the pump acts as if the tank is full and i cant put any more petrol in.
The solution to this seems to be to fill the tank in 50-60 individual bursts...
is this a quirk of the design?
Yes.
Try rotating the pump nozzle through 180 degrees before filling.

The owners manual for the S does mention this I think. I recall is says to hold the pump about 2 inches out from fully inserted. I'll dig it out tonight and check. It is to do with the design of the filler pipe.
Yup, I hold the nozzle so that I can see the fuel going in and when I see the fuel starting to froth up in the filler neck, I release the lever a little until it starts to drop again. Can usually fill up without it clicking off this way.
