Was handed the keys to an S with the instructions to see how grippy the new tyres were.

Its been a while since I drove an S "hard". I forgot how responsive the steering is, how good the feedback to the wheels is and how bloody low they are

got the back end out a little but didnt push someone else's car too hard. Still great fun. If I ever become short of cash or need it elsewhere, I wouldnt hesitate buying another. What a giggle.

One thing that I didnt realise is how much shorter the cabin is on the S1 compared to my old S3. At 6' 3" I had to dislocate my knee to climb in to the thing and had to drive with my hands on the top of the steering wheel since my knees were wedged against the sides! Glad I didnt have to do that all the way to le mans in my S.

Good to hear you still enjoy a blat in the S..

Drove Slamm's S3 and Pies V8S on Sunday.

Compared to mine, Slamm's S3 is HEAVY... heavy clutch pedal, heavy throttle pedal, nicely balanced though... and great sound - very different to mine. Pulls very well, and very responsive, but not as smooth as mine (IMHO). Be interesting to see what Slamm recons to mine.

Now Pies V8S... me it's quick. Aside from crippling me with the worlds heaviest clutch pedal (I have some ligaments missing in my left leg!) it was a hoot. SO much torque... much quicker than any 4.0 Chim or Griff, and I get the impression that it would really worry some 5 litre cars... oh, and it's not finished yet either..!

the V6S I drove over the weekend was a good performer. Felt as quick as my old one which was considered fast for a V6.

HarryW has been working on his V8S and is all over the back of me when we go out for a blast. Quite noticeably quicker. We had some fun on the way to the Hampshire TVRCC meet last Thursday on the A31. We forgot there were some people following us for directions Got up to some high speeds and Harry's car is VERY fast.

Phil- Going by the figures ive seen from my car and HarryW car IMHO they are delivering very similar performance

Its just a question of how much do you want to spend and knowing when to stop "improving"

really? When Podie said it was "much quicker" than a 4 litre Chim/Griff I got the impression yours was a lot more powerful. HarryW's car is all over the back of me, but whether or not I'd class it as "much quicker" I'm not so sure...

oh cool. I am well up for that. Might bring the Rover when it reaches 275bhp

seriously, I know craig wants to get the NOS cerb on the track and now he is the new Hants RO maybe we can make some inroads at sorting this out somewhere southern...

Certainly is ... had a new throttle pot a short while back which I may have fried again at the weekend but other than that she is running well. New tyres are great and thanks for sending on the stereo front I now have music while I drive.

Planning on a few little upgrades to smarten her up now - Shnozz has kindly offered to help me. Will send photos when all done.

Too busy at work to reply to this earlier! Damn work - it gets in the way of PHing...

As for your motor, Podie, well it was soooo different to mine. In fact, I utterly agree with your comment about S's having a personality of their own as each one seems to be different. The lightened clutch and really sensitive throttle made the car one hell of a lot easier to drive. The extra length on your (gear) knob helps too (cough), eh-hem.....

Anyway, back to the car. When Podie told me to floor it in his S3C, I jumped out of my skin when it started to really pop and bang from the exhaust. As it's running lean at the moment (post chipping) the engine gets flooded with loads of fuel and the car requires a smoother stroking to get the power through minus popping. I'd kind of got used to wearing lead boots when driving mine, so it required a bit more self control.

Podie's S is really quick though and purrs along nicely. Pies's V8S is just a beast. It's the kind of animal that makes your pupils dilate when you start it up, but then everything contracts (including bum cheeks) when you put your foot down!!! Pies, I'd like to see what it's like when the suspension has bedded in, as I was not overly convinced with the AVO set-up, I confess it felt far too skitish for my liking.

It's one of the many things I love about Mid Essex meets - you get to have a go in other cars and there's always something new to try even in the same model...
