Electical Woes - Hazard Lights & Horn

I've sorted all the other electrical gremlins on this S1 however the hazard lights and horn have me stumped.
The indicators work normally and the horns work normally. The stalk switch unit works correctly. I've checked it with a meter so I'm at a total loss, can anyone offer some tips/ideas?

Reading your initial post I'm confused with the status of the horn, you said you are having problems then you say it works normally?
Hazard light switch can fail I think, might be worth a try if you can get one second hand ebay or somewhere (I think its an early sierra one, later ones are round).
Are other circuits that don't need ignition on working?
Interior light, clock etc.

For the horn:
Have you checked (at the horn itself) whether when the stalk is pressed there is 12V there or not? If you are not getting a switching supply (which I suspect is the case) then work back up the cabling to each joint in turn and see where the 12V supply is present. This will tell you if you have a wire break (which is quite possible). I think the points to check are (bearing in mind this is from memory and not cct diagram):
Horn supply
Fuse box output
Fuse box input
Ignition wiring
Stalk Plug
Try checking using a "rats tail" from each area so the full circuit remains in tact. The other way is to "jump out" each section in turn. IIRC my horn doesn't work with ignition off (but I'm not 100% sure of this so others please correct me)
For the hazards I think they have a seperate earth point (IIRC) for the switch which is in the drivers footwell. If my memory is correct then check this.
The above is offered accepting I am 125 miles from my car and books so all is from memory (which isn't what it used to be)

When I bought my S3 I drove from the North East of England to West Central Scotland without Hazard lights Horn or Radio, and never noticed they were not working I was too busy watching the gauges & listening to the exhaust growl.
I noticed the next day, I then found a blue fuse in the central pocket on the transmission tunnel, a call to the previous owner solved the problem, he always removed the fuse when the car was off the road in winter to stop live supply to the radio flattening the battery and had forgotten to put it back when he sold the car. On the S3 they all work with the ignition switched off. suggest you check if the fuse is there and if its working

Hi Guys,
Im from the Netherlands and bought a S3C on an action. Great car but i've got the same problem. My hazard lights and horn don't work. What have i done so far.
1. Changed the steering column switch ( Still no horn and hazards but indicator left and right work again)
2. Clock and interior lighting also works
3. Fuse is good (same as clock and interior lighting isn't it?) I've checked and replaced all broken fuses so that can't be it.
4. Horn works when I short-circuit it with a live wire
I guess both the horn and the hazzerdlights are powered true the purple/red wire which is connected to the switch on the steeringcolumn. And that wire isn't getting 12 volts but only 1 volt...... I'm getting a bit frustrated after hours of search and checking so i'm thinking of cutting the wire and attach a new 12v life one with fuse directly from the battery but maybe anyone of you can help?
Any tips on these issue or someone with the same experience?

I've already removed the aftermarket alarm but this was not attached to the horn (strange but true) but is had an alternative dedicated siren so that explains it I think. I also have working indicator lights so they are fine but the hazzard doesnt work?
A few questions which may help solve the problem.
Does the hazzerds use the same relay to blink as the indicator lights?
I'm pretty sure its nog a earth/ground problem but can someone explane me where I can find a grounding/earth spot for the incar electrics so I can check the connection?
Could it be a problemen with the yellow connector?
Does your horn work with the ignition etc turn off? So key out of the car?
Does someone know if my assumption that the purple/red wire in in the indicatorstick on the steeringwheel colhum is the powerfeeed for the horn aswel as the hazzards?
its the last thing to cet the Car MOT ready but its also the hardest I guess

Looking at the wiring diagram, there are 2 wires that feed the "Hazard switch" block. I don't quite understand the internals of this block but the horn is fed by it.
One feed is purple/red like you say. The other feed is green and also wired to the cigar lighter.
It seems logical that the purple/red is for both horn and hazard.
Where in Holland are you ?

Yes fixed it! After hours of checking double checking and testing all possible problems all the problems were coused by a foulty indicator stick which I changed already last week and a wire which was broken inside the mantle and hidden behind the dashboard above the tunnel console smile So aftherall quite a simple fault but finding it is alwayse the problem with electrics.......
And the the first testdrive! Wow! What a car. As there was some work going on in front of my garage and with having the car bought not running I have had the change of driving it but now all work on the car and in front of the garage is finished we did our first testrun last night and that feeling is really priceless! Afther hours and hours of work and challenges driving a car for the first time.... My jaws hurts from all the smiling
In about an hour its going for the MOT so hopefull this weekend we can have some real (legal) fun
