S2 Clutch Master Cylinder
Discussion
This is my first post, so be gentle!
I have a 1989 S2 2.9 and I will need to replace the Clutch Master Cylinder soon, it is weeping onto the actuating rod; it still works OK though.
I have heard that they are getting hard to obtain. Does anyone know what the bore size is (i.e. 0.7, 0.75 etc) so that I can obtain a generic one of the same size. I am presuming that the mounting flange is the same as the generic integral cylinders that the autosport sites stock.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Someone will give you the proper detail but I think it is a special - I think it is a standard cylinder but with a bigger union where the hydraulic pipe connects to it.
Here's an option

should be stamped on the casting (just dealt with mine yesterday) 0.70 on mine and yes its a generic cylinder. Apparently morris marina and Itals used 'em but are still used now in FFord and other racers. The union (on mine)is 12mm 0.1 thread but has been changed at some stage and the T**t who did it didnt change the pipe union so forced a different thread in. Had to drill out the brass union (very carefully) and then pick out the remains of the brass from the thread and fit correct union. Anyway, job done, replacement seals were available if I'd reqd them.
Hi, I posted a link to a parts catalogue pdf from RT Racing a year or so ago but can't find it now. Mine (1990) were standard master and slave cylinders (either Lockhead or Girling). One (slave I think) didn't quite fit due to a flange being a few mm too large (even though it was the same part). We had to take the new piston out and fit it to the old casing to solve the problem.

The bore is 0.7. I got a new cylinder last year as I'd replaced the rubbers some years ago and thought it wouldn't work again - but when I fitted the new cyl the pipe wouldn't fit as the screw thread in the new cyl was too small. I finished up putting the new inards into the old cyl and it is fine - I could have got away with just the kit again based on that. The replacement seals are easy to fit and not expensive - the seal kit being Lucas Girling SP2102 which is not too expensive and relatively easy to get so could be worth a go assuming the bore of the old cyl is not scored/lipped.

Thanks very much for the information, now I can order one the right size. Although the one on the car will hopefully last till the end of summer. The only mark that is on mine is the Girling name and casting number, no sizes. I am going to try a Wilwood master cylinder, as I have used these on our race cars in the past and they have proven to be very reliable; also reasonably priced!
If any one is interested then try these guy's at Rally Design - http://www.rallydesign.co.uk - They are a great source for all sorts of kit.
I have only had the car for about 6 weeks and I still can't stop smiling, it is absolutely awesome!!!!! It's so bad that I often find myself just standing in the garage staring at it! Yes, I am sad - my wife tells me often.Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
