http://www.pistonheads.com/tvr/s/default.asp?story...It's the inspiration for what I want to do to my S (when I was on about 500bhp etc). I know it has a different engine to my S (mine's 2.9 V6), but I know I can get the power from the engine. What I'm worried about is the fact that various people have said the S in the link didn't have the standard S chassis. Can anyone tell me what the differences were? Can I mod mine to take the 500bhp I'm after?

Quite simply No If your thinking about this level of power You'd better start saving for a cerbera or an early tuscan then start saving again for the modifications which won't be cheap. Just get the S out as it is and enjoy, even with the humble 170hp its a very light car with proper suspension and a joy to drive.

I agree with Alan. The better way to max the bhp you can get from an S is probably to buy this... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1333407.htm...and sort the cosmetics out. Joo's car kicks out 330bhp and he's done no end of work on it (inc suspension) that would cost you many many thousands. However for £5k you could expect to get a respray and retrim the interior etc. Also, if I remember from one of your previous posts you're still in your early 20's. Have you checked the insurance prem's for a 500bhp heavily modified TVR? I'd say drive the car for a year, work out if you really want an extra 330bhp over your current engine and if you do, then buy a cerb, tuscan etc - it'll be a lot cheaper in the long run Cheers, Longers PS I'm not saying the above just cos I don't want to see my first TVR messed about with

Well, Boosted LS1 said it's possible to get 500bhp. I want to keep my S as it is. I don't want a Cerbera instead....I want my S to be unique, and brutally powerful. I also want to keep the original engine, albeit modified. What is it about the S2 chassis that means it can't handle the power? I may settle for 300bhp if 500 is looking too expensive to obtain.

That means 4K rebuild of chassis. Money I do not have.

It was a long time ago that I saw the car at TVR France and the track day at Magny Cours but I recollect the following:
RS500 motor, rear mounted Hewland gearbox, propshaft turned at engine rpm! unequal wishbone suspension F/R (no trailing arms).
Looked more like a GT1 sports prototype than an S underneath.

The S chassis isnt a bad place to start for a race car chassis, only real area for concern is the semi trailing arm rear suspension, and then its only a concern as its needs careful selection of damper/spring settings and esepcially the anti squat angle (something TVR addressed themselves in later S cars). Boosted can sort the engine, no worries there, albeit its a fairly serious engine build and thus not pennies. An exhaust system will need to be made to suit, Boosted will advise on lengths/diameters of pipes i guess. New gearbox, either aftermarket version of a T5, or something more racey, dependant on your needs/budget. Chassis will need a full cage adding, creating a full space frame, again pretty std fare. This will massively reduce chassis flex (not bad in an S to be fair), and also help keep you safe with the performnace potential of the motor. The car will need an LSD to put the power down, and body mods are required for wider rubber. Converting to disc brakes on teh rear, and a serious upgrade to the front end (again pretty well off the shelf wilwwod or AP these days) will be needed to haul it in. A full set of poly bushes will keep the wheels pointing in the intended directions (rosejoints are a bit harsh for road work) and then its shocks. Nitrons are the shock of choice for most, although there are cheaper alternatives, but given the performance potential, the better, the safer.
all in all its a comprehensive list, but not impossible, funds permitting. Very little is bespoke, most of the stuff has been done before, so its more of a shopping list project, its not as if your putting a V8 in a Mini! the S is already half way there. Dont underestimate the costs, or the 100s of pitfalls that youll encounter, it would be much easier and probably cheaper to buy two cerberas, but wheres the fun in that?
OK thats the rousing encouragement out of the way, get it done!!
Personally, an S with 300hp will feel like lightning, and 500hp wont actually make it any faster on the road, only on the track. If you do build it, start doing it bit by bit leaving the hp to the very last. Power is nothing without control...
Good luck and can i have the first go when its finished please ;-)

Good luck and can i have the first go when its finished please ;-) Excellent, glad someone has some faith in my crazy idea! I'm not anywhere near competent enough to attempt the big mods yet, but I'm studying motorsport engineering at Diploma level, so I'm getting some knowledge that'll help. The guys at college are gonna use my car as an example of how to change brakes, as I'm ordering some new 260mm front discs, new pads, and new calipers. We're also checking the brake pipes and replacing the brake fluid. Then I will move onto the suspension, and then probably chassis mods. The LAST thing will be the engine, I don't fancy taking a dodgy handling/stopping car out with 300+bhp. I'll enjoy her for what she is for a year or so yet though before I mod anything serious.
