I have an S1 and have had the gearbox out a couple of times, it is an easy job that once you get get the exhaust off it is only a 10/15 minute job to get the gearbox out. The last time i took it out was because i had trashed the gearbox and it only took me and a mate half an hour to change it including the exhaust and a tea break.

By the way i do have a car lift and i am a time served mechanic so it may take an amateur a bit longer!!

The hardest part is getting the propshaft off, the way to do it is to pop the distributer cap off so the engine can rock back further when you take the gearbox mount off, then when you un-bolt the prop from the rear diff also remove the coupling on the diff then it gives you just enough room to get the prop out. Other than that it's pretty much a straight forward un-bolt and drop out job.

That's interesting Graham, has your S1 chassis got the unboltable gearbox mount bracket, because if it has then I suspect your chassis has been modified iaw my "chassis cut" bit. If you are saying the S1 and S2 can be done with engine in then you can join me in the arguments as one of the "it can be done" brigade as I have on numerous occasions on here pointed to my website as proof it's possible when others have said it isn't. BTW I did it on axle stands in the garage and am an amateur - it took a day to get it off and 4 hours to get it back in (I was working out how for the getting it off)

Also for the propshaft you can remove it in 10 minutes if you follow these steps 3 to 7

Yes my chassis has got a removable bracket for the gearbox mount but it looks like it always has had, but then again my chassis is in very good condition so i wouldn't rule out the fact that it may have been replaced or had a renovation in the past. I am definitly with you that it can be done with the engine in as i've done it three times already.
