MOT statistics
Discussion
Following pressure from the BBC'c Martin Rosenbaum VOSA have now published MOT data for 2007 by car make and model.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/opensecrets/2010/01/mot...
Figures for 2008 and 2009 are to be published later this year.
The interesting pages are those relating to our cars of course:
The figures are not be entirely accurate but do give an insight into the numbers of cars on the road and common causes for MOT failure.
In 2007 424 S's passed the MOT (159 failed). 125 V8's passed (53 failed)
There are no details about retests. I presume that if a car failed and then subsequently passed it will appear as both a pass and a fail.
Reasons for failure in most common order are
Lighting and signalling
Brakes
Fuel and Exhaust
Suspension
Steering
Drivers view of the road
Tyres
Body and structure
The statistics here are a little woolly ~ for example the number failing on lights is 35 but the total failures are quoted as 32.
Other anomalies are the quoted dates for each model.
So we have 424 V6's passing in 2007 ~ the S owners list on the Wiki lists 234 ~ although some are abroad and others are off road
Of the 125 V8's we have 57 in the Wiki.
It may be lies, damn lies and statistics but it does give interesting reading.
549 S's on legally on the road in 2007.
Here are the figures as published ( Published in Excel but I've tweeked them and changed format)
Cheers
Tim
Edited to add: Sorry, figures in the table are rather small. I have them in PDF, JPG and XLS format if someone can tell me how to republish them larger.
Alternatively PM me if you want me to email the table to you

I think if it fails but is retested immediately and passed it's not listed as a fail but is listed under the cause of fail, (v8s shows 68 fails due to lighting but only 52 fails total).I'd be interested to know how they decided what to put under what model name, my v8 definitely says "290S" on the v5 so there must be a fair bit of interpretation of the raw data to get that lot out of it
You must still be snowed in then Tim ?
get out there are strip those wishbones instead of trawling the interweb
So allowing for some dodgy stats lets say there were 549 S's in UK roads in 2007 maybe another 100 or so on SORN plus non-UK models another 100 perhaps so thats less than 750 of the original 2800 left !
if you want individuality with high grin factor - Buy an S !

Mine definately said 290S on the V5 when I bought it, the seller sent it off to transfer ownership to me and it came back saying V8S So if we calculate that Great Britain amounts to a total of 80,823 square miles each road legal TVR "owns" the equivalent of 147 sq miles - which just happens to be the exact area of the Isle of Wight - that's why you don't wear your fingers out flashing at other S series TVRs.
I must get out more...
I must get out more...
So Assuming that a fail and then subsequent pass won't show on the fail count.. there are nearly 200 fails left, what became of these..? if we assume 50% are under repair.. did we loose 100 S's from the UK roads last year.. if we did our cars will we v rare soon but I hope not.. maybe 75% are under repair somewhere and we only lost 50 or so... some would be mothballed I assume.
I wonder is it possible to get the stats for number of cars scrapped each year by type.. shame no one works at the dvla.?
Sad now..
