A mate and I are staying in Helmsley for three nights in March. We are bringing our wives and will each be in our own cars. We are looking for some really good roads to drive (a combination of scenery for the girls and proper roads for the boys).

Any recommendations?

Also, guidance on where to look out for cameras and unmarked cars would be helpful.

Also - where is the best fish and chip shop in Whitby?

Thank you.

Cameras - they'll be the ones you have for taking pictures of the chicks looking glam in the cars ! At least in North Yorkshire. If you venture north to Cleveland or south to East Yorkshire you may find a few. There are advantages to living up north.

Not sure what the unmarked cars are at present - Volvos are always popular, but I have seen a scooby working out of Helmsley some months ago - chasing bikers. All roads out of Helmsley are a 'risk' as they are popular with bikers.
They are also a good start for interesting roads. Scarborough to Whitby is good and some bits across the moors. (Heading north and west of Whitby you enter Cleveland police area).

Having had some very disappointing fish and chips from some of the bigger names in Whitby I would recommend Mr Chips, south of the bridge, near the start of the run up the old town. Head up there anyway to get some Fortunes kippers.

Ice-cream at the Harbour Bar in Scarborough.

Beer, not lager - and don't forget your flat cap and ferret (my neighbour has some if you need to call and borrow one)!

Your based in the right place for an excellent circle route -

Take the B1257 past Rievaulx Abbey northwards accross the moors towards Guisborough

Then take the A171 to Whitby F&C

Back down the A169 To Pickering and back to Helmsley.

Stops at Goatland (Heartbeat) and a nice steam train railway, Beck Hole nearby tiny pub great sandwiches.

Out of Helmsley on the Sboro RD

Through Kirby Moorside then left to Hutton le Hole (pretty little place)

Onward to Blakey Ridge - outstanding views
Stop for a pint (real beer)

Great moorland road with clear views and a chance to stretch the motor

Right at T junc and into Whitby

The Magpie cafe on the quayside is the popular place with french styleed waitresses!
However pretty it is its over priced (bit like Bettys) but it is an experience the girls will like smile

Enjoy!

Out of Hutton le-hole up the hill, over the ridge, then take the Right turn after the pub - then back looping round into Hutton-le-hole.

I would drive in circles round that couple of miles till I ran out of fuel if I could - its magic.

Or B1363 York to Helmsley, West on the A170, up the A169, then back down, left at the pub, Past Dalby, Fish and Chips in Thornton-le-dale, past the Spitfire and a drop in to nose round some tasty 911's at MarkMullens place.

Or...

No cameras but unmarked Volvos, Scooby and a Mk5 Golf GTi.

It's also worth heading west along the A684 to Hawes.

Vote for all the above, Blakey ridge is special then next right after the pub on the top.

Hawes and up over the butter tubs turn right follow along to Reeth the down to Massham.

Hawes and on to the B6255 to the Settle Via Duct on to Settle A65 to Skipton and then A59 Back to York and then back to B&B and chill

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I will plot them and hope to do most of them over the 4 days.

Looking forward also to fish and chips in Whitby.

Any more suggestions of roads, places to visit or places to eat are still welcome.

Trenchers And Magpie fish shops are the very best fish restaurants in Whitby.A drive down chimney bank into Rosedale abbey from Hutton le Hole is a must with a latte at the Post office at Rosedale. Also a must is the crab salad or sarney at Sandsend White Hart pub. Enjoy.

Whitby should be quite nice in March, not over run with people. Duke of York is a nice pub at the top of the steps by the Abbey. Chippy as suggested, Magpie or Trenchers. A lot of the others are a bit avarage. The Lion Inn,Blakey Ridge on the moors is good pub, just watch out for the sheep as lambing will have started and they do roam free on the roads.

Just turn off any major road and keep going. biggrin

North Yorks has to have the best and most varied roads in England.

No cameras either, and if you do drift into East Yorks (also fantastic driving roads), I think there's only the cams on the Market Weighton by-pass and the Beverley by-pass, if memory serves me correctly. smile

Take it steady on the A19, and anywhere around Cleveland.

...another vote for Blakey ridge here, and most of the Scarborough to Thirsk route is good fun. As previously stated, all of the above are popular with motorcyclists, but watch out for some of the serious cycling clubs too (I think the Cleveland Wheelers are usually out most weekends, as are York's Clifton Cycling Club).

If you don't mind heading further West for a day trip, I'd recommend The Angel at Hetton (better than The Star at Harome IMO) and you get some absolutely amazing views of the Dales (and Malham Cove is close by).

Cheers,
Tom

I live in Helmsley. The Helmsley to Stokesley road is superb, far better than Hutton/Blakey IMO. There is a sign telling you that ten million people have been killed on it in the last five years so you know that it is good.
