The raod from Braemar past glenshee is also sublime

Definetly, drove this recently in the MR2 on the way to Aviemore, great fun when you disappear into the clouds as you reach the top...... (on the day I was there at least)

Not an option regrettably.

Surely this has to be one of the best places in the world? Great roads, stunning lochs, mountains and coastline. You can stick America and Africa - give me a fortnight around Gairloch any day...

This is the natural habitat for the UR quattro.....it's become an annual thing for some of us from the QOC.

As for the midges just go faster and kill some more!!

An earthquake at Applecross. Caused by the spate of PHer's checking this threads roads out for real?!

That is going to have to be one heck of a big bridge... Sad to see it happen really, I've done that road on everything from a BSA C15 to a Ducati 900SS, from a clapped out Escort to a 328i convertible, in summer and in winter, and it is ALWAYS fun!

Just got back from a superb trip to Scotland, with roads and locations influenced by PH contributors, especially Steve Carter and Shadytrees postings. Heading from Glasgow out through the Mull of Kintyre, and thence to Mull, Ardnamurchan/Arisaig, Skye, Wester Ross, NW Highlands and the Cairngorms, we managed to take in some amazing roads which, with the scenery, lack of traffic and road quality, put almost all of my day to day tarmac stretches here in the South to shame. Roads which really stand out - Wester Ross Coastal trail (all of it, including Applecross), A832, A835 to Ullapool/Summer Isles, A861 in Sunart and A939/A93 in the Cairngorms - although this detracts from many other roads which now have me planning an off-season return journey! Highly recommended - and helped by amazing weather throughout.

Will indeed Edward - was on a holiday with my girlfriend, who albeit infinitely patient, would probably have drawn the line on holiday time being spent talking Zonda's etc! Smashing part of the world you are in - and makes complete sense to be located there given the road quality and traffic volumes. Koenigsegg in Mull - would be quite an experience!

shadytree - waterfall - where near Fort William was it -loked like one up the Glen - on the glen nevis road - on the road to the famous ben nevis (as used in the yearly race ) , but it cold also be in Glencoe .

Someone on about midges - only suggestion - eat garliccy food ( apparently a pipe works wonders to ,but highland ones are imune to most things)- ( or drink plenty of whisky ( and swat them as they fall off in a drunken stupor)

Roads - about 20/30 years ago , i could have reccomended the A830 (Fort Wiliam/Mallaig road, but now only about 20 miles of this is windy and a good run ) -- in those days a good time was 1 hour - 45 mins if a maniac( or knew the road well ) -48 miles of windy /twisty/ single track road (WITH PASSING PLACES) ( with 10 miles of govt classed 40mph road ,between Glenfinnan and Lochailort , travelled by locals at up to 90)
Now - last year i travelled same in about 40 mins , without sweat.A good motor, would only have to slow down on the 10 miles of single track, doing naughty speeds over the rest (barring the 10 miles of "40 " government road)

Brilliant posts,
would just like to add that if your looking for a great drive and fantastic roads head up to Lochinver. The road up across to the Black Isle alone is awsome, then the run up to ullapool , then Lochinver itself just jaw dropping. we stayed at some cottages (i've just posted this elsewhere)

www.cathairdhubh.co.uk/

Its a brilliant drive up to it, the drive from main road to the cottages is like a rally stage (it is tarmaced etc ..what I mean is the turns and drops etc)

- Private beach nearby

- Secluded

- Views right over to the Western Isles from the bedrooms

- Total darkness at nigh (no light polution)

It is stunning...

On this thought, you should try planning your route on Google earth - you put your start and finish destination in and it maps and tracks your route and when you hit the play button it actually gives you a "drive through" in a sort of 3d view effect....its brilliant when the mapped area is in hidef (did it for niagra falls when I was in canada stayingin Hamilton)

We could even start a google earth bog page (or whatever they call it) on here with drivers favourite drive ..too difficult to explain..but if you go to google eart you'll see that they have communities that post and map out differnt things for each other to see.

I got tasked with transporting a load of kit for a kayak surfing contest to Thurso. My house to Thurso 254 miles iirc. Took a snifter over 4 hours. That includes doing a large proportion of the A9 Perth-Aviemore in granny mode due to cops infront and fog.

That hairpin was where I discovered the limits of the hire cars braking on the way back as I was fully hooning and suddenly had one very long pedal!
