Hey chaps!

Where's the best place to get a K&N filter for my 420? Best price / best value? What does K&N stand for?

Alternatively, is there a good aftermarket fitting - might improve performance etc.? I have seen the induction stuff by ACT.

cheers!

K&N is just a brand name, if you have the original airfilter fitting i.e 2 stainless steel plates at either end and 4 long rods in the middle RT Racing do a K&N replacement element for this, alternatively you could ditch all the heavy stuff and buy a clamp on filter like I did. I went for a Green Fliter, same as a K&N but they have a larger range of sizes, the one I brought was good for 340bhp so should be ok !

BTW ,has any Wedger with power steering reservoir attached to end of air filter plate, fitted a 'clamp on' K&N in place of it ? Was wondering if it's been done ...

Never seen that one before!

Is it some sort of remote reservoir? conventional ones are combined with the pump and fixed to a bracket on the side of the engine, high or low depending on the pulley arrangement.

My reservoir is attached to the end of the filter! (at least i think it's the power steering reservoir (full of red hydraulic type fluid) anyone else have a fit like this?
p.s. I have a 400 with Air conditioning fitted ,this may be a reason (space and all that)

Hi. I've also got air conditioning (1989 450 SEAC) and the alternator and power steering fluid reservoir are in the same position as yours. My air filter is K&N and fitted higher up in the engine bay. Your air filter looks the same that I had on the 350se. I think it is already a high flowing filter ? Pipercross.

I always wondered what car the power steering resevoir comes off - does anyone know. I think jmorgan has the same on his car from what I remeber of the photos he posted a while back.

Yep, looks the same but other than it is bolted to the wheel arch its in the same place. Alternator is in the same place as well. Range Rover lump and front end so all reversed on mine I think.

apart from JMorgans setup ,has anyone seen a replacement silicone hose, plenum to AFM,for an air-con equipped car ....as the AFM is further set back, you cannot get a 90 degree hose to fit. The standard hose is sort of 's' shaped (unfortunately Tim at ACT doesn't do one)

Well thats the first time I have seen that set up, the one on Jeffs 400 and RedWedge5 both exit straight from the plenum and sit in the recess oposite. Must be handy for checking the fluid though! I would imagine that you can fabricate a bracket to mount it too and this would allow you to change the filter .

Paul, mine was done in this way as there was no time to air box it elsewhere. Mainly I had run out of dosh on the rebuild if truth be known. There was a Samco dealer around the corner where he got he hoses. They do many sections, worth a look?
www.samcosport.com/

PS a shot of the bracket for the resevoir. Top just to the left of the alternator.

Also the hose section used is very stretchy. There is a 1mm or so difference between the flow meter 'ole and filter trumpet thingy so if there is not a direct match to both end sizes it does stretch a bit (but not much!)

Also , firefox, I use an ITG filter. easier to clean etc and its a foam filter. Bit fidly ordering the parts but you can't half hear the induction roar on full welly.

Edited to add a Samco outlet is in Nuneaton if its any use. DJE is around the corner from it.

If enough interest i will produce a specially shaped hose for the V8 wedge, otherwise as mentioned you can use an ordinary elbow and reposition the meter, but be careful as standard Samco leg lengths are too short.
to answer the original question the V8 wedge K&N is available from us £38, not sure how this compares with the foam filters (i don't stock them) probably around twice the price, but they do last indefinately.

I for one would certainly be interested in a shaped hose Tim, or alternatively you could re-produce that nice carbon fibre one you did some years ago, now that I would really like

No dimensions yet ,but here's a piccy....I think it would be tough to manufacture this ,what do you think Tim? Too much of an awkward design for silicone hosing?....maybe with an intermeadiate solid insert ,i dunno?....I really don't want to move AFM cos of the arsing about it would involve especially in view of the Pwr Stg reservoir position. As you can see the pipe is in poor condtion. (if silicone replacement not feasible, anyone got one spare? )

This is how the K&N filter, airflow meter and air hose are fitted on my SEAC. The power steering reservoir is fitted to a bracket in the front nearside part of the bonnet.

Thats a bit of a snakey pipe you got going there!

To be fair I think Tim was talking about manufacturing for the standard non air con Wedges which is much less involved, but he does stock flexible hose for the inlet if you want to renew it.
