Hi Mate..Any luck with the mechanic you mentioned?
Hi ZigHe's booked in for the 1st May mate, but if i can get it sorted before and save me some money, then no harm in trying, have finally got my head around the timing and how the dizzy works, so as long as its just the lifers that have stuck i should be home and dry, he saids lol, so hopefully finish that Saturday and GV (Andy) has kindly offered to pop over sunday to check my carb install.
You guys have all been soooooo helpfull it's unreal, so a massive thank you from me for giving me the will to continue.
cheers

well its been along day, firstly removing all the hydraulic lifters, pulling them apart and testing each one which to my supprise was pretty easy, the only fault i could find on a few, was the small bearing fitted to the inner sleve had become stuck in which a good spray of WD40 did the trick, so all back together again, cleaned and gapped plugs, set timing, yep i got it right first time lol and it fired up but unfortunately the ticking is still there but nowhere near as bad and the engine is running pretty sweet for the first time, so at last some progess.
My exhaust is blowing really badly for some reason and am still having problems with overheating, my heater is blowing out hot air???, but there must be an air lock somewhere which i have to sort out, have also read that my exhaust blow could be cause a knocking noise, so tomorrow i,ll check it out and get it sealed, so all in all am pretty happy with my days work and if it was not overheating i would have been driving it today, nevermind hopefully get it sorted in the morning and take it for a drive.
Ps looks like my day just got better as this could be my overheating issues

My exhaust is blowing really badly
Could be the last bit of ticking is exhaust manifold or gaskets.
Run it from cold - you only get about 60s to do this before it gets dangerously hot - and run your hand around the exhaust manifold - you will feel the blow.
If it's the gaskets sometimes just nipping up the bolts is sufficient (and a lot quicker than getting the mani off...)

Well made a bit more progress today thanks to GV ( ANDY) popping over and helping me go though my carb conversion and sorting out my overheating, so a massive thank you Andy it was really nice to meet you mate.
Also tried fixing the exhausts, but there still blowing, so i,ll get some new gaskets this week and see if that fixes the issue.
Unforunately the knocking is still present which does sound like the cam, but i have a guy coming around on Tuesday who will confirm hopefully what the issue is and i,ll take it from there, still am pretty please as am getting nearer, i only wish there was more hours in the day to work on the car.
Cheers Guys

Hi Ralph.
I have just noticed you are in Surrey, where are you exactly. I have a 350i and have done lots of work to it so know my way around one pretty well by now. If you need some help i may be able to pop over sometime, or just come over for a wedgey chat and a cuppa!
Cheers Glen

From your description I think it's unlikely it's the camshaft as when these wear the lobes round off, which means less potential for noise rather than more.
I guess you should have taken a look at them recently whe you had the valley gasket off.
Any results from feeling around the exhaust for blowing? Where is it still blowing from, the manifold gaskets (onto the engine?)

i did check the lifters and lobes and while they where not perfect i could not see any damage and the exhaust, i was 99% sure the blow from the 2 x joints under the doors but it appear to be in the manifolds themselfs which is not that easy to find, but am pretty sure these are not causing the knocking as the sound is coming from the water pump area/ dizzy area of the engine.

Well the mechinic came and it is the camshalf thats making the noise and as he was with me at the time when the engine did not do this, he has advise that i check the oil ways to the lifters and also crank the lump with the valley gasket removed to see if i can see a problem, so there's my weekend work and hopefully i can spot the issue and sort it this weekend as the cars Mot runs out on Tuesday next week and need to get it to an exhaust place so they can sort out the blowing before i book the car in.
Cheers
