the 4 screws on mine are actually bolts, with a washer that has one side chopped off and a small nut to hold in place. My hands are too big to get the nut off the bolt .. probably going to have to drop the steering column down to get access
All I want to do is change the speedo & Rev counter illumination for a newer brighter bulb !

Can you reach the bulb holder without removal? All I want to do is change the speedo & Rev counter illumination for a newer brighter bulb !
I suspect mine were the same and a previous owner had the self tappers in. I had these stainless screws (nut and bolt with a screw driver head rather than a hexagon) and used them to replace with a larger washer at the rear. Getting the nut back on, I think I used a BA spanner and was able to screw in from the front whilst doing the impossible behind the rear.
What are the chances of drilling out? Have to be careful though with a sharp drill and catching the swarf may not be too bad?

OK, if anyone wants to contemplate the 400 dash removal.
Nice n posh behind the shiny but that sodding bolt and nut are hard to get at. Watch out behind there with a spanner.
Thanks at last a photo that shows what I wanted to see - I was feeling behind there this evening and that's what I suspected. A wing nut will of course replace it...Nice n posh behind the shiny but that sodding bolt and nut are hard to get at. Watch out behind there with a spanner.

not sure if I can reach to get the bulb out. now Ive seen yours, I might just have a go
Been finking, can you get a long nose pliers on the end? Can you get the flat of a screw driver on and turn the other side? Sometimes I have had this work, suspect the screwdriver might not here but worth a shot. What about nipping the end with a mole grip? Carefully mind unless you have a mini set? Plumbers pipe pliers?Sorry, without looking again I cannot remember what is in the way but thinking what I would try. On a wild note, will it undo without anything on the back or maybe just a finger tip?

I am having a mate machine me some heater slider control knobs out of aluminum.
If he is making you some do you think he could make an extra set?Because of the padded leather on the dash of mine it is really difficult to alter the temperature etc.
so ill resurrect this thread when im back in the UK and have a chance to pop and see him

I think the sliders are different between 350i and 400SE... are yours a sort of pivoting semicircle in plastic? If so the 'knob' is part of the 'slider'. I think the 400's are a true linear sliding design and the 'knobs' press onto the metal tangs you can see on Jason's car.Because of the padded leather on the dash of mine it is really difficult to alter the temperature etc.
I made some alloy ones for my 390...
...they match the column stalks
