All,

I just picked this up off the official web site :

TVR HOLDING STATEMENT

We can confirm that a 100% shareholding in UK car-maker TVR has been purchased today. The new owner is Nikolai Smolenski.

Plans for the future are to continue trading, invest heavily in new technology and production methods, and hence enhance the TVR brand to become a global player.

There will be no large-scale restructuring and new managerial appointments will be made in due course. Peter Wheeler, previous owner, will remain on board as a senior consultant.

Read this on another thread, if its true and it seems that there is at least 3 versions of the story going around now then we can only hope that the development of the engines goes from strength to strength.
After all they will still be British...won't they??

Personally I think it's very sad, a case of another British company falling into the hands of a foreigner so that we can no longer be as proud of the product.

Having said that, I bought the Wedge for what it is, the fact that it was British and I could stick a union jack on the back was a bonus. I have owned and enjoyed Bosch and Jap machinery in my past.

It probably wont make much difference to us enthusiasts with our classics but makes you think that the new models will be 'softened' for a wider market appeal e.g the US. Wedges will always be British

Money talks louder than pride in this case but I wonder if anyone else was in the running anyway to give PW his retirement exit route??

Don't worry. They won't be retro-fitted (unless the EU demands it!). And don't call me Shirley!

Why couldn't Nikolai Smolenski have bought something useless and totally uninteresting ... such as a football team?

Coat already got!

It is a crazy thing happing to TVR (and it happened before with Martin Lilley - remember a very young guy taking over TVR in 1965), and very like TVR.
No sweat I think, TVR is used to that.
Money is money and it keeps the world turning round (and TVR).
At least we can all sit back and watch, while enjoying our TVRs.
Anything is better then a rumour of a bankrupty on hand, don't you think.
Good luck and all the best to TVR and the new owner (if it is happening, you never now)

Sure TVR will continue under the new ownership and of course PW had to retire eventually but I can't help but feel it is a sad day.. have to thank him for raising the profile over the years and turning out some of the most striking cars ever made - at least we can all continue to be proud that we own a piece of automotive history that is TVR (when it was truly British)..

Nikolai Smolenski is the 23 year old son of a Russian Oil baron according to radio 2 last night.

Sounds like someone similar to Abramovich but prefers cars to football!

Hang on to your Wedges - watch them appreciate as the marque moves away from its roots.

Been reading the odd thread as well. Wasn't my company, PW can do what he likes. I didn't have 15 million lying around so couldn't buy.

First of all I think this is great news for the Factory and all who work there - they have a more secure and exciting future now.

It's also great news for owners of speed 6 powered TiV's - the development will continue on their power plant, ensuring increased reliability, power and parts availability.

As for the owners of older examples of the marque such as ourselves, well, it'd be great if we could persuade Nikolai to open his wallet a little further and buy the RV8 production line.

Come to think of it, what better low cost power plant could he use in a larger scale of production TVR? It could be aimed mid-market to help finance development of road going exotica and the LeMans effort!
With a single turbo and multipoint LPG injection, it could be a true brit muscle car with twenty first century emissions levels and brisk performance. With AJP's V8 knowhow combined with the larger scale of production we would have a winner.

www.moscowtimes.ru/stories/2004/07/28/003.html

Nikolai's dad seems to be a bit of a character...

"Alexander Smolensky, who reportedly now spends much of his time in Austria, helped bankroll former President Boris Yeltsin's 1996 campaign. After SBS-Agro's dramatic collapse, he famously told The Wall Street Journal that people were stupid for trusting him with their money, and that his foreign creditors deserved nothing "but dead donkey ears."
