Dimmed headlights
Discussion
Sussed it !!
My 400SE has (sorry had) non functional dim/dip headlights, so the pods popped up with the sidelights but the headlights didn't come on so it looked daft...
I thought the dim dip used the resistors that used to be near the PS pump, however further probing with a meter has confirmed that those where for the dash light dimmer (hence why they have 12v applied when the sidelights are on) as they where open circuit due to corrosion this explains off/off/on operation of the dash lights. I have now confirmed that the dim dip is the square black Lucas module velcro'd to the carpet next to the fuse box, with a 6 pin multi plug attaching it to the loom.
To stop the pods raising with the side lights there are a pair of brown/white wire's that go from the pod control relay to the diode and a second brown/white attached to the same pin on the relay that goes back into the loom (couldn't find where it went to ?) anyway cutting this keeps the pods down when the side lights are on, I've put a connector in here so I can restore the original operation if I need to, the single diode seems to be enough to keep the pods up for dip & main.
I then made some new brackets for the fuse / relay panel as the plastic ones broke...

Thanks to you too !
Your post finally prompted me into sorting out something that has annoyed me ever since I got the car, it looks a lot better with the sidelights on with the lamp pods where they should be.
I did a bit of research on the dim dip thing and according to wikipedia it was only law for a few years (87 - 88) before the European commission threw it out. I guess TVR had already designed the looms so kept the dim dip part in just in case Brussels did a U turn.
One job down, the boot lock not popping the boot properly is next on the "little things that annoy me list"
Have fun, assuming your fusebox is still attached by screws it's really easy to get out but a complete t
t to get back in place...

On Delilah the sidelights used to come on without having the pods up..However the lights were on even when the pods were down...Ziga
same as Delilah happens on my 280i.. however. the 350i, pods go up with only sidelights on. Not sure why.. and what the differences are though. ( I'm a bit thick on that side of things )Gassing Station | Wedges | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
