Swirl pot - Ensures that fuel pump and engine have a supply of fuel when you are cornering, without the swirl pot the fuel moving about in tank can cause the pump to suck in air (as the fuel moves away from the tank outlet) causing the engine to run lean or cut out completely.
I believe the later cars have the swirl pot and T-piece (part ref 40) as one part (mine is anyway). RTR stock replacements if yours is past it's best.

As said, it's the swirl pot. I replaced mine this year with a new one from RT Racing - about £75'ish IIRC. The breather pipe next to the T piece is very small diameter, and needs a proper fuel hose clip to secure it - I found that ordinary worm drive clips are not small enough, and don't grip properly. I would also strongly suggest that all these hoses are fully fitted to the swirl pot prior to installation, as it's very difficult to access the clips once in place.

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated
Number7 it's definitely not the same part as the one you have pictured - there is only one connection from the fuel tank
Maybe later cars were changed? My swirl pot connects directly to the 2 tank outlets. Plus in that manual, there does not seem to be a breather from the swirl pot. Don't you just love the variations in manufacture!Number7 it's definitely not the same part as the one you have pictured - there is only one connection from the fuel tank

Does yours have a filter inside ?

New one - no. Old one, no idea, not opened it up, but I suspect not. The crap in the picture is what I managed to shake out of the old one. I addition, based on suggestions here, I installed the filter pictured between the swirl pot and the pump. The normal filter is still there downstream of the pump.7.

Well look what I found:

The filter is plastic body with a very fine plastic mesh, and is a push-fit to the outlet.

All the original swirl pots had filters in, but all the new ali ones don't hence the need to use a pre-filter before the fuel pump, unless you want to change pump every 6 months

Aha, thanks Seven, hadn't seen this all that time back!
ETA: Why did you change it, it looks pretty good to me...? Send me the bits up and I'll weld it back together
I'd better make room for a pre-filter as well, just in case my filter only got dislodged when I took the swirl pot off. Mind you the tanks are pretty spotless inside, no cr%p rattling around when I emptied them... but it'd be an expensive ommission after all this work.

Aaahh...so you were asleep then
I only changed it on the basis that the pot and hoses were 20+ years old, and it would have been almost impossible to change them with the pot in situ (especially the small one at the top), plus I didn't know how much muck was inside it. Just made sense to replace it all at the same time and add the pre-filter.
