Time has come to renew cam & chain!
Is it possible to withdraw the cam from the front of the block with engine in situ ?
Any tips would be appreciated.

Thnaks for tips so far chaps
However......

How much of an arse is it to undo the manifolds ?

Yes it is possible... But, you need to raise the engine (once you've got timing cover off and all the rockers removed.) to allow the cam to come out over the bar at the front of the engine bay...

It's VERY tight between the engine and radiator, like 5-10mm! with care it's possible without damage.

Now your only problem is choosing a cam to put back in!

Worth considering a duplex sprocket & chain conversion, while you're at it.... and if you really want to push the boat out, go for an adjustable cam timing gear as well...

You will probably have to undo the manifolds as well, to allow the engine to be lifted enough.

Certainly the one on the off side. Nice piece of work TVR! The nearside may be ok.

I did this in situe on the 400. (no lifting needed) though the cam to rad clearance was actually a foul but I got it out. Fitted a V8 developments MC1 with new hydraulic followers, vernier timing gear and a duplex chain. I understand the MC1 would work with a 350 but check with V8 Developments as double springs may be needed. I'm just getting a 256 fitted to the SEAC (400 style grunt below 4k then the big grunt comes in from there like a turbo and all the way to 7k - ) cica 330hp once tuned

Tas - that is one crazy cam .. is it a Kent Cam ?

I take it it's just for race use .. can't imagine that one on the road

Thats about right, We dyno'd a SEAC with a 256 a few years ago another Yellow one , Tas you might know it ?, it made 330 bhp with 250 lb ft, peak power was at 7250.

Yep the 256 is for the race/rally car and the hope is big trumpet base and Tim's triple plenum as well. The debate right now is a)Std front end, 2)Serp dissy front end or 3)Serp non-dissy front end. 1 is dodgy cos of the oil pump, 2 looks good but getting all the FEAD is a t*at but I've got a full hot wire EMS and this engine type uses the crank oil pump. 3 would mean getting something like an MBE system to run it but I'm told with the 256 getting the correct fuelling is a bit*h so having sequential injection and multi coils is best! The cam will be from V8Devt but I think they get it from Kent.
Tim was it SEAC #14 per chance?

Interestingly enough I'm in the process of developing a sequential injection / multi-coil set-up on my Wedge. Emerald are supplying the unit and my car is the guinea pig so far I've got the engine running but still a few teething troubles at the moment, pretty confident its going to be a step foward tho' I'll post results when I've got some. which should be up on the 273 ponies it had last time

Blimey Tim that torque is a bit on the low side for a RV8, is it the peak torque or the torque at peak power point, if you see where I'm coming from here . I assume that's a the trade off for getting the power so high . Was that a 420 or 450 btw .

It was a 4.5, peak torque BTW, may have been 260 but no more, yes that is the price you pay for high revs/bhp

Tim - do you know of any way of contacting Jeff Stratham and asking if he would be interested in the BBWF.

He's got the best looking car in the world and I just love looking at it and I bet I'm not alone !

Tas - yes, best you give him a call.

It would be fantastic to have him there (with or without his factory racer..).

Awsome website.
I've just spent an hour talking with Mark Adams - top bloke. He pretty much has convinced me to go the fully mapped route and ditch the dissy. MBE or GEMS or the Cobra mans route
