Moved the thread from my 'I have a new toy'.
Managed to get up and start some investigation into my cold start issues and generally have a good look at the car. Had all the plugs out and all seems very good there, no dramas. I noticed on turning the car off, a lot of vacuum noise so after a few start ups and turn offs, found the noise coming from the Brake servo... blowing down the vacuum hose it seems the servo is kaput, and its just taking and taking air from the breather pipe. As a little experiment we undid the hose the Servo end and just blanked it over with my finger. The one way valve is working well on the engine side, and the car fired up so much better! No wonder with the servo harvesting it all! haha
I now need to source a servo, and its not proving easy, so any help would be great. The master cylinder is AP.
Along with this the car seems to have a misfire, so fun will continue with this next time!

Hi mate...Im not sure if we ever got to the bottom of this one...I know that on my 280i it was an early Capri..Not mk3..Might of been 1.6L..I did hear that a Ford fiesta mk2 fits also but can't remember if it was confirmed..A definitive answer would be good...Ziga

I think I'm just going to whip it off and run it down to all the motor factors to see if they can match it. Yes I saw that thread, problem is I just cant trust it as we know many different cars have had different servos for no reason! It's probably Ford....
My car has had 4 pot APs put on, so may have been uprated anyway.

Yes you're right!
Been up to Robsport near Cambridge today and I must say they were fantastic. The Servo is actually off a STAG. and it turns out it was just the seal between the master cylinder that had gone, so instead of 150 quid it turned into 8!
Hoping to fit it to the car today and report back later.

Hello all.....
The Fun has been continuing today with more braking system entertainment. Well the rears were all seized up, looks like they hadn't had much attention for a while. Managed to wing the pistons back in and fit new pads so all good there. greased up the Ujs while I was there and prop and handbrake cable. Moving down the the front all was good in the braking area, so just had the pads out and copper greased them up, lovely, done. During my time under the front end I noticed the bottom steering bush in the body is shot so I need a new one... Any idea where I can get one? Also noticed the sump was leaking, found all the bolts loose (classic) so we'll see if that helps. Checked for play in the front of the prop.. all good so greased the UJ and the slider. Good
Now the fun really started. (And this is where I need some help/advice). When I turn the lights on, in dipped and high beam selections with the stalk, the high beam illumination lamp stays on. After some advice that a relay could be causing this, tried taking some out to test the theory. after a while I ended up with ALL the Relays in the footwell and the warning light still on (bd). During all this, the drivers pod decided to stop working properly. So this created another Job . Ended up removing the Pod after finding the Motor very hot. The mechanism was very seized up indeed. So, armed with lube this was seen to, and put back. Now it works better than the best out of the two! Must do the same to the other when I have a chance.
Back to the illumination bulb. Could this be the stalk? Another strange thing that happened recently is the Park Brake warning light. Before I started messing around with the servo when It came off it never made a flicker, but since fitting the servo back in and new seal between the master cylinder, the light is now permenatly on (great). Looking at the handbrake switch (its a brand new one) I just disconnected it completely and the light is still on, so something completely wrong there.
Are the warning lights MOT failures
Any help with any of this will be much appreciated, and maybe fatal to whether I make it to BBWF haha. Actually thats a lie Il be there with my dad in his Griff either way but would like to pedal under my own steam.

I dont think its a fail if you hand brake light does not work.dont think my has ever worked.it cones on if the fuild is low.
Cheers! Thing is I know there is plenty of fluid... so it cant be that. Must be something I knocked when I moved it all around. Will have to have a big look!Tricey
Sounds a bit weird..Not sure about the handbrake light for an MOT..I know that anything fitted with illumination must do so or its an advisory (Fail) but you still have 10 days thereafter...Not sure about the bulkhead bush..You could try Neil at ML performance...

RT might have them as well.
Hopefully someone can advise on the bush as i cannot remember where i bought mine...probably DG but...Well...Hes gone now.
I see you have a 1984 350i..Im wondering if your headlight illumination has anything to do with a blue/White striped wire in the stalk..My flash indicator didn't work on the 280i..(Same switchgear) until i pushed the connector back onto the terminal inside the switch...Although it sounds like something may be shorting out or an earth could be corroded....Cheers...Ziga

Yeah its going to be a fun one!
On my car there are a load of fuses and relays under the glove box in the passenger footwell, but looking at a schematic there should be more somewhere... Im suspecting they will be behind the dash?! I didn't notice if the flasher was working (should have thought about checking it properly) I did play with it but don't think anything happened. From studying a V8 schematic in the bible.... I looks like it could be the indicator stalk switch, or the relay for the dip/main beam. I know the previous owner had to quickly at the last minute put the dash back together, and decided to change some relays and all the bulbs so could be simple mistake for the wrong relay in place! Not sure!

I remember I had a problem there the high beam light cam on permanently and it was quite a simple fault so don't start pulling it all apart, I will try and find it.
Yes I believe all warning lights must work (or not be on when they shouldn't be) for the MoT. That certainly includes light warnings (beam and fog) and brake warnings.
For the handbrake one, overenthusiastic pulling on the handbrake can bend the bracket a bit, and the light then stays on, so gently bend it back. You will have to remove the centre console leather to see what's going on...

Have you ever seen a MOT tester actually check them...? ...or seatbelts... or that the doors can all be opened from inside... or that the sidelight lenses have the correct 'E' markings... etc. etc..

Mine does...But he also doesn't give me an advisory for stuff like non-illuminating fog light switches..Play in lower N/S ball joint and a front brake imbalance of 47%...He knows that i will sort them out el pronto...Which i did......or seatbelts... or that the doors can all be opened from inside... or that the sidelight lenses have the correct 'E' markings... etc. etc..
Mind you i have known them for 30 years....
Mine failed me one year on passenger door not opening from inside (despite the fact that you can pop the roof, stand up and get out in less time....
So I had to fix the handle linkage. Now I didn't actually see him testing it, so no.
I also had a fail once on a non-working fog lamp warning light.

Tricey, IMHO, I'm not aware of any warning light being a failure, but imagine advisory. However as Zig says if it's illuminated all the time, sounds like a short.
Re the fuses and relays, yours is clearly an early series one, so their should be a block of fuses and a block of relays behind the glove box accessed via the pull down flap with the ECU pinned on. Not aware of any others.
Cheers and good luck with the MOT.

Cheers Bradderz,
Went up to the barn today to clean it before it goes in (everyone knows a clean car passes). I tried the flash function on the stalk.. first time nothing.. then it worked (pods popped up, was hoping it would have been just the fogs that flashed haha) but as it worked.. smoke came from the indicator stalk. Had the exact same problem on a Lupo GTi I used to own, swapped it for a new part and perfect again. So its clearly wrong, new switch/stalk will be needed, but maybe, just maybe it will fix the 'tell-tale' light on the dash.
