Hi Guys
I have just picked up my wedge 1987 350i I won on ebay, car seems fine for what I paid.

The seller told me of a issue with the SM Module and that he had jumpered the fuel pump relay as the SM Module was faulty and would not switch it on.

So I purchased a new SM Module fitted it and removed the jumper wire, now the car will start for 5 second and cut out, I can also hear one of the relays chattering.

So I think I have now got back to the original fault, im sure it will be easy to find if I could find out which relay is for what, my glove box does not have a diagram on it, the maintence guid has a relay location guide but is totally different to mine.

Does anyone have a idea what relay is for what ? on the diagrams on the net there is only 6x 3 relays mine has 7x 3 relays.

Any help appreciated

John

West London near Hampton Court

After reading some of the info on that site, Im thinking its the fuel pump contacts in the AFM will test tomorrow to see.

You may find this enhanced circuit diagram of the flapper Efi system helps with the rest of the information on my site?

As far as identifying your main and pump relay locations, they should be adjacent to the SM. I am not familiar with your relay layout, but the circuit cable colours will help, as will an ops manual, methinks.

The flapper Efi system suffers generally from connector problems, so cleaning contacts and re-seating the two relays in their bases can also help, likewise the AFM and ECU connectors. smile

Does it run OK with a permanent 12v supply to the fuel pump? Shunting the "pump run" contact in the flapper is one method, I have a handy piece of wood for wedging open the flap in the flapper to run the fuel pump (for diagnostic purposes only, not when out and about!)

Car all sorted, turned out previous owner had made a mistake and put some of the relays in the wrong place, the SM was in the Fuel pump position and the Fuel Pump and ECU relays where round the wrong !
I checked the ecu on pin 10 and found no volts on it !
Now starts and runs well, just need to sort slight hesitation out, think its the throttle pot.

Well done, glad you got sorted.

I was going to suggest if you got really stuck you could pop round to me and swap bits as I have most EFI spares
