Hello again

Does a standard Rover V8 starter motor fit the wedge, it looks a tight fit . I think I had better start (no pun) to rectify the non start with a new unit.

Cheers

"I have taken the Bosch one off and put the SD1 Unipart cheaper one one. Only trouble is you have to make a bigger dent in the manifold to clear the larger starter, but
a) they last longer
and
b) they are much cheaper "

I seem to remember it's a Land Rover unit last time I changed one. You're better of removing it and taking it along to you friendly parts man for a proper id though. While its off, may be worth checking the brushes - easy enough to renew and a lot cheaper than a new motor. And I would definitely recommend fabricating a heat shield between the manifold and the starter. As you've noticed, it's tight, almost touching, which eventually kills them. My last one started smoking badly, and when I pulled it apart, there was a major meltdown inside.
let me know if you want me to dig out a part number.

Ok as i see it. The problem is/was when I had it. The starter would not work intermitently (usually when Sam stopped off for a pint after work) not even a click which points to a sticky solenoid or no power to the solenoid at all. I'ts not temperature dependant and no fiddling around with wires seemed to help. I'ts my opinion that the solenoid is sticking and could probably be cleaned. You could confirm this by getting it up on a ramp and giving it a bloody good clout and see if it works (serious suggestion).
The "standard" Rover starter almost certainly won't fit as they are too long (without modifying the Zorst). The spare motor I have for you (which at the mo is unavailable due to my good friend and mechanic being..well dead).((God bless you Dave)). I got it new from fleebay and it was advertised as a smaller unit, and certainly looked smaller.
Hope this helps ya.

Thanks chaps...Dicky, comiserations on your mate. Sorry to hear that.

I'll keep trying it, the symptoms are exactly as you say it, nothing, no clicks etc but plenty of power in the battery. When it starts I'll get it up on ramps and clout it.

The interior has come up lovely, I cleaned the carpets today as well so it's smelling all nice too.

I may be slightly wrong here, but my wife has actually shown a glimmer of interest in the wedge, and has never done so with the porkers, and even the S, so you never know I might get her in this one. That'll be fun.....

You have about a 1 in 8 chance of getting one that fits... Rover use the same part number to cover a variety of motors which all fit the Rover application but don't fit the Wedge. You basically need the small one. Best to match exactly with the original or get an exchange. If you do get an exchange make sure the replacement is the same as the original as those part number shaningans have meant that you might get the wrong one and of course your original has gone to the big recycler in wherever.

If you could dig out a number that would be great. Hopefully it will be the same as mine. trouble is, I need to start it to get it on ramps.

Top point that Steve, I'll keep my mits on it and personally compare them I think. I need a copy of your book as well, could you email me with details of how to order one. Cheers.

Edited to add, I've just clicked on your profile, that'll be the answer then.

Mike, mine is a Lucas unit, obtained from a Lucas Service outlet, part no. LRS709. This was mid-2003, £130 exchange.

I still stand by my statement of being able to fit the bigger ones after bashing the manifold a bit.

There are a couple of other things to try before removal though:

1. I found that the white/red wire to the solenoid once burnt through and broke in one place - gave similar symptoms to yours. Make sure you get volts to the solenoid contact when you turn the key.

2. Some starters have a rubber dome you can press in which moves the solenoid actuator. If it's sticking a bit you can get grease in there in situ, and free it up.

The TVR starters are quite often held in with hex-socket bolts and can be a pig to get out! Make sure you undo the top bolt first - if you can't shift it then all bets are off...

Well.......it turns over now, but sounds like a complete bag of snot, complete with plumes of blue smoke, it's currently a straight 4 cylinder wedge.
