You really don't know how useful reverse gear is until you haven't got it!

Anyway, apparently the new gearbox is going to be OK. 3D Transmissions in Reading are friendly and professional and cheerfully told me that the fix should be easy and cheap. They also tell me that they add a gearbox additive to every gearbox, reduced wear, noise, heat, etc. Sounds like a genuinely good idea rather than just a profit generator per se.
