Will this need to be a daily driver? As a Student I didn't use my car that much.
Am wondering what kit car insurance would be like at your age?
I can't speak from experience, but a friend of mine about 4 years back decided to build a kitcar aged 20. I was told that insurance on the kitcar would be cheaper than his 1.4 Vauxhall Astra and apparently the reasoning was that if you build a car you are less likely to crash it. Can anyone confirm this?Am wondering what kit car insurance would be like at your age?
In regards to the age of the car I was going to suggest a fettled classic mini cooper but as an everyday car is may become tiresome, especially on the motorway!

Good shout. Another car I'd love to drive one day As far as day to day use-ability goes, personally I could easily live with an MX5 or Mini. I rarely go on a motorway (much prefer the scenic route instead ) and have a very short commute to the station. A kit car may be a step to far though!
Here's some ideas for what I could get:
Cheap and reliable, and good economy, quite quick, low insurance:

Supposed to be a hoot to drive and cheap to run, low insurance:

Bit expensive for now, but maybe will come down in price in 8 months:

Smart looking, reasonably quick with low insurance:

Nice example with low miles, top down hooning and RWD, very high ins. cost:

Fast, good MPG, but expensive to buy (hope price comes down) and insure:

Have you actually tried getting quotes on some of these suggestions, I swear that insurance group has very little to do with some of the quotes I got when I was younger!
PS. I think the best (funniest) I ever got was well over £1000 a month for a lexus.
Yeah I have tried quotes, and you're right, it's not all about insurance group. However, the SportKA and Fiat Panda 100HP have been the lowest quotes ive found.PS. I think the best (funniest) I ever got was well over £1000 a month for a lexus.
MX-5 was about £3000 full comp. which is as much as they're worth as a car!
20K! then if your insuring in your own name and living at uni (after a year) i really wouldn't bother on anything too nice tbh and id wait a couple of years till i could afford something worthwhile that wont cost me an arm and a leg and then have to sell 12months latter. however i also wouldn't (and didn't) listen to me. Fabia VRS? diesel, and quicker than you'd expect. yes its not the best handling or overly desirable but offers a lot for the money.
insurance is a minefiled and ring around as much as you can as at 19 you may find a surprisingly good quote from some people. (i know of some 20yo's drving modified 200sx'x for not much more than 1.5k insurance)

Fabia VRS Gets my vote taking the mileage into account even if it costs a little more the fuel savings will go a long way over 20k
30mpg Petrol @ 1.05p for 20K is £3185
50mpg Diesel @ 1.07p for 20K is £1947
Just speculative figure but that 1K a year almost your insurance!!!!
oh my god almost panic'd but from to morrow my comute is hang on wait for it 2 miles! ill take 20mpg thanks!!

20k miles a year? Forgot about anything that will keep up with us lot, buy something cheap and fun and enjoy it. Spend less than £3k on the car, get TPFT insurance, and run it for a couple of years. The money you save on fuel and insurance and so on you can put towards something really nice for your 21st

Sounds like a good idea, as I don't think i'd like putting 20k miles on something nice. However, I don't think i'll be able to get anything nice until after uni, which will be a bummer. But at least then insurance will be low.
