How about a Tuscan?
That's what I've been trying to tell him. There's better out there than boring old BMW's.Bet I'm in trouble now

You don't say if any of the one's with cave like interiors were actually nice to drive though, which for me is what's great about the ones I've driven?
For example the 130i sounded great, was bloody quick and was a lot of fun to drive, granted I'm not a huge fan of the looks and the interiors are more functional that exciting, but to me that's not the point, it's how they drive and on that basis alone I'd now consider a 1-series where I never would have before driving one. I'm sure if it was a poverty spec 118i I wouldn't feel the same way mind.

Ok..
A couple of 320's and a 318. (So boring old rep mobiles)
My gripes were for all of them were as follows.
Almost no feedback through the steering.
(personal preference here) Steering slightly over assisted.
(annoyance) Bloody economy gauge.Why FFS????
ABS. Kept cutting in when going over a bump and braking downhill.
The power delivery was ok but there wasn't any real sense of purpose.
If you tried to hustle the car along a bit it just didn't feel as though it was really doing anything.
The ride quality was ok but too wallowly at times.
The road holding / grip was good but again there wasn't any real feedback to the driver.
All in all they were startlingly competent cars to drive but at no time did I want to take any of them for a spin. They just did the job very well. But there wasn't anything that really made me want to drive them. Wholly competent but totally uninspiring.
Yes... I realise that the /////////M is a totally different beast but my time in lesser cars wouldn't endear me to ever look at buying one.
Oh and don't get me started on BMW's (supposed) service centres.

Doesn't need to be an M car, you just need to drive one with enough / more than enough power like the 130 / 330 or Nigel's 535d etc. then they would make sense. I also thought the steering was a little light however there was still plently of feedback in the ones I'd driven so not a huge issue for me, was a shock getting back into my car though (it's heavy).
Power delivery is a tough one, jumping out of my car which is er not the smoothest in the world into the 130 which is super smooth is deceptive, however the only draw back I can see is you end up going much faster than you appritiate.
