I'd personally plump for South Ascot - for a multitude of reasons - most of which are raised on your post above.

I will 2nd K on that too, try for S Ascot or Sunninghill, much better than N Ascot but will be reflected in house pricing too.

hmmm

" Ascot when you watch the races you think to yourself "ooooooo isn't that nice" but aside in the real world in the REAL ascot you will find it stretches the definite boundry of chav breeding ground to chav infested apart from race days everyday is a Chav day in ascot at first you think it's some sort of parade at 12 at night that no-ones told you about but then you go outside your home to find about 50 drunk chavs sprawling down the street singing chav songs like "is it is it wicked we're lovin it..." but all though these chavs just provide amusement for the rest of society on the high street its an ugly story else where if you try to walk down Fernbank road from 7 - 9 pm you will surely be a) hurled abuse at from a chav no taller then grandma's walking stick, b) asked "got a fag mate innit" in which this will lead to your demise because you will find if you give one chav a "fag" 5 billion other chavs suddenly appear and ask for a "fag" but if you say no and/or you don't smoke you will soon be told "na mate your lying innit you 'ave got fags give me one or i'll 'it you" in which case you walk away to find the chavs older brother, mother, dad and any other chav spawn following you down fernbank road telling you that you hit there son c) almost runover by supposed "boyracers" in stolen ford fiesta populars .
The 2nd worst place to be is Goaters road park between 9-12pm this is where you will find the so called "rebels" who will be dealing drugs, taking drugs and trying to woo the chavettes who are about 11 and they are about 19 if your lucky enough and it's mating season when you walk in to goaters road park you may survive unscathed .
The worst place to go in the whole of ascot is south ascot A) a chav breeding ground, B) loadsa of chavs off there rocker 24/7 C) the chav children never appear to be at school, if you ever have to walk through south ascot you are advised to take these common procedures 1. hide all riches, yes you will be mugged for a Nokia 5110 2. avoid eye contact, all the chavs in the area will unite and form an assault on you with there dads involved too 3.never walk alone, chavs will see you as an easy target to mug, brutalise or ask for a fag
4.don't stop to look at the pretty Hyns restaurant the chavs are only a few yards away and can your wallet wrangling around in your pocket 5.last but not least if you encounter a chav runaway, if you hit one you hit them all and they will come back in numbers.
Remember to try keep safe in ascot and if worse comes to worse downgrade yourself and pretend to be a chav"

Jackal, agree with the above that if the choice is between North and South, it's South every time but as BDNigel says, expect to pay a premium on house prices.
Trains are a pain. Frequent enough service but they stop at every station known to man going into London.
Traffic's not a major problem except during the 3rd week of June for obvious reasons but if you have any sense, you'll be in Le Mans then. biggrin

it came from some chavtown website

ok, thanks people
i might drive through there today and pay a visit

i remember having family freidns in cookham and that was nice, we went to ascot a couple of times but will have to refresh my memory

traffic and teh divide sounds a bit offputting though.... im trying to find somewhere where peoples outlooks are if anything a bit more wholesome and resolved rather than aspirational and money/success driven

Friends of mine used to live on the London Road, 1/2 a mile or so up from the shops. Very nice area but at times a pain getting to and from the Windsor side. Worth bearing in mind if you work north of Ascot.

I don't really know North and South ascot but property prices are much different which suggests there are cathcment areas. Parts of Winkfield/winkfield row are nice and property prices are reasonably...but there doesn't seem to much in the way of amenities. Maybe they are hidden somewhere.

Where do yuo live now? May help to know what you are looking for.

i live in hampton at the moment. great place, brilliant schools, on the river, next to bushy park, and love the surrounding areas like richmond and hampton court but for us to get a proper detached family home here, we need silly money, like 800-1mil plus. Also, teh trafiic and density of human beings is really grating.

so looking for a small villagey place with countryside, decent people, friendly atmopshere, very good schools and 50mins or under to london

Lindfield in west sussex is currently top of the list... and Claygate is 2nd on the list.

I dont like big residential areas either .... i like to be on a green or near fields/playgrounds and local shops. Also it has to be from about 8 oclock to 5 oclock around teh M25 to be reaosnably near family.

going to check out Godalming today and maybe Godtsone as well. i cant help thinking that Ascot/sunningdale/byfleet/winkfield etc.. is all a little bit too built up and poor value for money

still to go and visit: Horsham, tunbridge wells

I live near Worplesdon, it is not to bad and a little further out than West Byfleet and has a direct train to waterloo.

Worplesdon - Woking - Waterloo.

It is better value for money and only 2-3 miles north of guildford.

We moved to Sunningdale (7 years ago) because of the transport links - M25, M3 & M4 all within easy reach. The train is a pain, stopping at every station into Waterloo.

We then found out that the schools were good and the urban/rural mix was pretty good too. Moved from south of Dorking because from there the run up to the M25 and then difficulty getting past the A3 & M3 junctions were just a nightmare.

The cost of a 'proper detatched family house' in the Sunningdale/Sunninghill/South Ascot area can vary from £500k-1mil+. Proximity to the station and a couple of wealthy areas can affect the value substantially, hence why North Ascot appears to be good value. I've heard getting in to the 'right' schools can be difficult from that area too even though they're in the 'right' catchment area.

I like the area and because we couldn't afford the cost to move to a bigger 4 bed house we're extending ours.
