Hi everyone,
I'm thinking about selling the 911 (again!) and getting something else - an occasional use car, suitable for our various breakfast runs, weekend trips, the odd european jaunt, and so on. As some of you know i have been thinking along the lines of Gallardo (more money than i'd like to spend really), Morgan Aero 8 (resale?), Ultima (too raw for long trips), Cobra (sunny days only), etc.

Good for long trips, reliable, good performance, not going to depreciate like a stone, not too heavy... so given a theoretical spend of up to £45k what could i get?

1. 911 GT3
2. Morgan Aero 8
3. BMW M coupé
4. Another Chimaera
5. AMG CLK55
6. SL500 (old shape)
7.

Not too keen on the Z4 M coupé, think i'd go for the cab version.

Wanted a 550 until a drove one John - big anti-climax, my favourite recent Fezza (i.e. post F40). Same day i drove a 348 and 355, again bitterly disappointed.

Anyone got any weird and wonderful suggestions? I'd love to have bought a Marcos TSO but i'm guessing very few (if any) were made?

NSX? I'd rather keep the 911

Older RS4 too understeery, newer one is bad value compared to RS6.
Hmmm, RS6... one car to do it all...

E39 M5 to heavy, ditto current M5 and M6
Weissmann too much money for what it is
Sagaris doesn't float my boat. T350C with a corvette lump though...
Mustang too lardy
That TSO was a press car - you've seen how Nigel drives right?
Used to drive an R33 regularly, great fun but not that "special"- new one proves we are still being ripped off.

E28 M5 looks like fun for the money. Ditto Elise S2 with toyota power.

However pete clearly needs to give a watercooled bit of pork a go and I reckon the 996 C4S is a good shout! (maybe because it's the one I like).
If i ever bought a watercooled 911 it would have to have a 964 bottom end. That means GT2, GT3, or turbo.
Like the Noble idea since it's not a daily driver.
Didn't like the M3 CSL because of the bleedin' SMG II. Plus i already drive a 3 series every day.
Monaro would be a good daily driver but not special enough for "occasional use".

So far it's keep my 911, or switch to an Aero 8, or a GT3, or a Noble M12.

I've yet to do the Porsche thing although having been in a 996 GT3 RS I was very impressed. However, I have to put a shout in for the Noble, especially if it's for occasional use. The handling and acceleration of an M400 is pretty addictive.
This from the man with the Mosler? biggrin

Maybe it's time to consider another option.
1. 964 turbo, aka RUF RCT EVO (one of my all time dream cars)
or
2. 964 turbo, aka "Bad Boys" car

Simon, nice to see you're still on top form! biggrin
Enjoying the 6 then are you? Too big for the little roads i like to play on.

Sagaris is an interesting proposition but i'm not convinced how well values will hold together long term and they do require frequent fettling to keep them on the boil.
Aero 8 and 964 turbo (at circa 400bhp) both tempting though, as is the M12 GTO3, or Ultima Can Am at a push, but suitably low powered (nothing more than 400bhp - i find the Ultima is much more fun with less power than more).

Ric, long time!!! How's things? Not sure a B8 is "special" enough as i drive a 3 every day anyway.
B10 bi? Fuel consumption would make me weep, plus the 3.8 M5 is a much nicer drive (throttle response!).

So much money though, my car's worth less than half what yours is and behaves almost the same...

Not the 34, no, but i used to regularly drive a friend's R33 GTR and it made me feel like a driving god. But that's the problem, there was little challenge in going quickly, the car made it so easy for you that anyone could jump in it and make safe, fast progress.

Oh, and just out of interest (not because i'd be interested at all, honest) what do you reckon you'd sell the 993 for? (not that id ever consider an air cooled 911 you understand, and not that im desperate to get back in a Porsche or anything..)
Fidg, sorry only just spotted this. Manual 993 coupé seems to be hot property at the mo - i guess mine would go for around £22k/£23k.
