Just got my car back from a service and I asked for the chassis to be Waxoyled as I will be using the car in all weather. I have been billed for the Waxoyl but a look under the bonnet at the chassis around the engine bay I can't see anything. The chassis still looks the same with white paint and a few bits of rust!! Have i been ripped off or am i being stupid and looking in the wrong place? Or have they used new stealth technology Waxoyl?

Sounds like a case of your money back time. Better to use an epoxy mastic paint anyway.

James Speaking:

Can you give some details of the epoxy mastic stuff as I'm still in a dilema as to what to paint on my Landy chassis, I don't want wax waxoyl.

Cheers

Waxoyl can be clear or black, but either way you'll know if it's been done. Easiest bit to check is front upper wishbones. Mine were flaky white, now they are solid black. Time to query your bill methinks.

Ours was waxoiled at Offords and is clear but you can see it easily, also some overspray in places.

Is it the same or similer stuff they spray on new cars when shipping?

Epoxy Mastic - See full details at www.rust.co.uk

'This is a super durable rust inhibiting Epoxy Primer / Topcoat that penetrates and bonds rusted surfaces. It requires minimum surface preparation, which makes it ideal when shot blasting or aggressive cleaning is not an option. It can be overcoated with WEATHERGUARD two pack topcoat in hundreds of colours, or just leave it in standard satin black, it stands alone as the ultimate STEEL MAINTENANCE coating.'

It gives better protection than waxoyl and lasts a lot longer. Sorry to hear that your T350 chassis is rusting already.

you can also tell if it has been done by the smell of the stuff ....... try leaving the car running for a time and see if any dripps off when it gets hot .... if it has had a good coating it will.

I have been thinking of getting mine done before the worst of the winter sets in, especially as it lives outside.

I am assuming that most TVR specialist garages will do the work but how much should I expect to pay to have this done on a Chimaera?

Sometimes people apply waxoyl by "misting" with a 50% mix of Waxoyl and ?meths instead of the full 100% waxoyl. You should be able to wipe some off the chassis tubes with a finger though or at least it will feel sticky.

I'm told it sticks best if done in warm weather - and thinned a bit too. I paid £45 at an independent. It's not rocket science, just a horrible job!

Rust! Dashes out to beloved Tam to have a look. No sign of rust and all the tubes are a pale grey colour. I understood they were epoxy coated anyway.

If you have rust ad its under 2 years old the I would want it sorted under the warrantee.

Violent stone chips and grounding can remove the powder coating and cause small rust spots. I doubt this would be covered under warranty as it is "fair wear and tear".

Yes TVR's powder coating is real state-of-the-art stuff....

...in fact it's the only mechanised bit in the whole factory

Yep, finished my chassis work this Sunday, having spent a day last week scraping off the flaking powder-coat and re-painting it with hammerite in a matchig white/grey colour. After trying the brush-it-on method I tried the spray-it-on 50/50 with white spirit method and I reckon it is easier and better. I bought a big can of the stuff and have enough left for for a few years now. Garage smells nice too! Rich...

p.s. Hellipilot, what did your garage say when challenged?

Just did my chassis on Saturday, my father helped. Managed to waterproof myself as well in the process. Horrible job. Most waxolyl tends to melt off around the engine bay, which on my S,is also around the front wishbones.

On futher inspection I think it may have been done but melted off around the engine bay as Wildfire says. A good look under the car showed that there was some black wax type stuff! So I just payed the £2000 for the 6,000 mile service!! (A few other things were done!)
