I've had better days...
The photos tell you more than I can:
This was earlier, a nice day - looking good.

Then later:

Nice gentle left hander slightly downhill with a nice right bend - BANG! CRUNCH! Steering and brakes next to not there! May I say, I was scared! Sh1tle55! Managed with more luck than judgement to halt on my side of the road without flying into the adjacent field upside down which was my first fear. I was still shaking when Craig and Matt came back to find me - me still thinking I'd just had a flat. It was soon apparent that the wheel was shot too. Craig was straight out with the jack, getting his spacesaver out and organising Matt to get some air into it. He then realised it was a little more serious in that the ball joint had sheared. Arse!
The low loader appeared 2.1/2 hours later and an hour after that she's looking rather sorry for herself on my drive.

So much for Chatsworth tomorrow. I hope you have a better day than me today!

Holy cow! The upright failed *and* the rim split in two? Any idea what the sequence of events was?

I'm thinking perhaps the upright failed, the wishbone dropped onto the inside of the rim and cut through it before you could stop?

Only to happy to be of help Ian, and so glad you kept it shiney side up.

From what I saw at the scene, it looked like the lower ball joint let go causing the wheel to grind itself on the wishbone, inturn splitting the wheel in two. yikes

Just so lucky it didn't happen on some of the higher speed bends we'd driven.

Have a couple......in fact have alot of drinks tonight. Your a lucky, lucky man. angel

All the best, catch up soon.

Craig.

Feeling your pain, this was yesterday

Luckily this was at 3mph on my road, 6 days earlier and it might have been at 155ish on the autobahn or worse still whilst on the Ring yikes

You too chum, looks like you didn't damage your wing in the process so hopefully a not to difficult fix. Bet you had as much fun as me getting yours on a low loader though.

Another pic of mine, looks very similar.

Sorry guys I really feel for you, but 2 in 1 day??
I am paranoid allready every time I drive the TIV.
I hear noises that are not there (or are they?) and now I have to worry the wheels are dropping off as well.
Will lay awake all night worrying as I am taking Mrs Gloggy for a spin and lunch tomorrow.

Good to hear you're ok. I had a similar thing happen to me in my Mini, on Brighton Pier, in front of aproximately 2000 other minis.

I can't believe that the rim broke!

Jeez! Not good at all. Glad you're all o.k.

Any metalurgists out there? It'd be interesting to know the cause of failure. I think I may change mine just to be on the safe side; as far as I know they're original fit. . . .and that makes 'em 9 years old!

I had a lower ball joint go on my wedge a few years back, its not nice.

How old / how many miles have these cars which have popped joints?

What car are they off any way, SAAB isn't it?

Might be time to replace mine being as its a '92......

That's pretty scarey. Is that the sort of thing that would be picked up at service or is it a hidden metal fatigue job?

Good for you keeping it straight Ian.

This is incredibly serious imho.

I'm almost tempted to change both of mine before hitting Spa in June. That would really ruin my weekend.
