I was invited up to the TVR factory in Blackpool last Wednesday. Had a really interesting day going through the latest processes they implement for Glass Fibring, Priming and Paint Refinishing. Found out that in partnership with HB Body UK Ltd they have developed a revolutionary new Rubberised Stone Guard that can significantly reduce Stone Chips by up to 50% and is almost invisible to the eye. They are now offering this technology as an optional extra on all their new TVRs and seeing as they do not endorse the use of Armourfend, I have decided that we will also offer this Stone Guard technology as an extra on the cars we paint. The question is how much would people be happy to pay? I was thinking around the £100 mark for a front end. Would really appreciate some feedback on this.

If this is as good as it sounds it'll make a lot of TVR owners very happy. I'd like to see the 'almost invisible' before I'd commit - but if it is I'd be happy to pay the sort of figure you're thinking.

Book me in!

When mine gets bad enough to be done, I wouldn't mind paying an extra £100 for that sort of thing. Even better if it works

Sounds very attractive for £100, but added to what sort of cost for a FER? Is this the material that you apply before you complete the respray?

Sounds reasonable to me. Just had the Griff headlight conversion done by TVR Bodyshop and have collected 3 or 4 bad stone chips (down to glassfibre) already.

Not surprising really because just after picking up the car in June we did a 2500 mile tour in Europe ending up at Le-Man and 2 weeks later went to the Zolder meeting.

SORRY FOR THE DELAY IN GETTING BACK TO YOU ALL,I HAD TO MAKE SURE MY SUPPLER COULD GET THE PRODUCT,I NOW HAVE TRUCK LOADS ON ITS WAY.
IT IS VERY APPARENT TO ME THAT THIS IS A PROCESS THAT WE SHOULD DO ACROSS THE BORD ON ALL T.V.R, AT THE END OF THE DAY IT REDUCES STONE CHIPPING AND THIS CAN ONLY BE A GOOD THING.
THE COST OF A STANDARD FRONT END REPAINT IS £495+VAT I THINK IF I NOW SET THE PRICE AT £570 + VAT THIS WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE.
BECAUSE YOU APPLY STONE GARD BEFORE THE TOP COAT PAINT WORK IT IS ALMOST UNDETECTABLE TO THE EYE WE DO TRY TO KEEP IT TO THE LOWER FRONT END OF THE CAR, BUT WE ARE STILL EXPERIMENTING ON THIS AS TO HOW FAR UP TO COME.
SIMON FROM LEVENTEC, HAS JUST HAD A FRONT END REPAINT INC STONE GARD AND TWIN HEAD LIGHT CONV FITTED TO HIS STUNNING GRIFF, HE WILL KEEP ME IN TOUCH WILL HOW IT PERFORMS. ANY MORE TAKERS ?
I HOPE THIS HAS ANSWERED ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS, PLEASE FILL FREE TO CALL ME ON 01275 858461 OR E-MAIL ME FOR A BROCHURE.

My car is going in for a respray on the 26th.

I'm interested, but I really need to see the finish of the paint with the stone-chip guard applied?

Are we talking about the stuff you see along the lower parts of some modern cars. It gives a fairly rippled effect to the paint, but does reduce the chance of stone chipping?

Hmm, this is a bit late for me - I'm getting my car back on Monday after a front end respray, and the Armourfend man is coming to fit on Tuesday. Since I'm doing a trackday next weekend, I cannot afford to wait even if the cost is so much lower. I will be interested to see how it fares, and I suppose I could change in the future if the Armourfend isn't perfect.

So, won't the top coat just get as chipped as ever then?

Not trying to be funny - just don't understand. If it works, it sounds like a great idea.

I think its to do with the fact that this new primer makes the paint more elastic as I believe whats happening now is that the paint is water based and brittle, when hit by stones it just flakes off, whereas this stuff will allow a certain amount of flex and hence reduce stonechips.

Could be way way way off the mark though!

Matt.
