3200GT Spyder would have been near the top of the list if they hadn't ruined the back by replacing those gorgeos 'L' shaped lights with 'OLD' Honda Prelude lights.

Actually for your price range the car you would be looking at would be the older style rear 3200GT Spyder, they are around the 40k mark, so it would be a sorted 2nd hand car.

I'd go for the M3 - 4 seats, boot space, great to drive and easy to live with. The XKR, great car, but a different kettle of fish to the M3 - much more of a cruiser.

completely agree, go for the beemer

From that list, Boxster or M3 for me. If you want to have fun and save some money for something else, try an S2000.

I'd second that, or go for the NSX targa like Leadfoot said. I wouldn't fancy any of the cars off your list, not least because they all have very a dodgy image.

SLK32 AMG - Girl
XKR Conv. - Grandad
Z4 3.0i - Ugly
Boxster 3.2 - Poser
Corvette C5 conv - Ghastly over-blown USA trash, best left to hairy chested men with small nobs
M3 Conv. - W***ers car

*All strictly IMHO only, they're probably decent cars to drive.

Sorry mate - your comments here are just crap IMO. You've slagged off some of the best cars around! What do you drive? A nova?

oddly enough Neil has neglected to let us know what car he drives. About as constructive as a parcel of shite. Thank you.

My vote goes for the M3. Has to doesnt it really?!?

Not sure its so definitive!

How about the Audi S4 convertible? Just been announced, not sure of availablity yet, but might be a credible M3 alternative.

Sadly chaps, you didn't read my post correctly, if you had you would have seen the disclaimer:

It was meant tongue in cheek, don't get your Y-fronts in a twist.

By the way I'm currently awaiting delivery of a Honda S2000, though my first car was a J reg Nova 1.2i SX which I owned from 1993 to 1997.

Why? Are you looking to get your mullet permed?

(A car with a 9000rpm rev-limit is not a hairdressers car )

Sorry, must agree on the S2000, even my other half says it's to girly for her! the M3 is looking very popular at the moment, does anyone hear own one?
if so, does it share the same 'characteristic' as the rest of the E46 3 series range ie. engine hunting whilst held at certain throttle positions? we had a 325ci and could'nt wait to get rid of the car for this so called 'Characteristic'.

Love the banter and sugestions guys, it's good to get yer views, keep em comin.

I should have pointed out in my original post that I'm going to move more toward a little more luxury with this next car, hence the choices being so different to the Chimaera, I really don't think anything could compete with that package pound for pound, plus we're going traveling around europe more these days so something geared for getting caught in heat waves would be good (AC and lecy roof).

Cheers, Nik

M3, a very, very, nice driving machine. I can send you a tape/CD of my pre-cat Griff in full growl, you can play it whilst your driving it, coz that's the only thing missing!!!

Have you considered a Ferrari 456? I know you said nothing too flashy but they are reasonably understated for a 'Rarri and by all accounts are fantastic cars. There's a few nice low-milers on Autotrader now for around £40k.

thanks to all for advice given, I have now test driven:

911 cabrio (like draggin a fat girls arse around, dull interior)

Boxter S (lovely car in and out but no oomph or sound track and saw 4 others on test drive)

M3 cabrio better than 911 handling not as sweet as boxter

XKR as said, good cruiser but no sports car

Ferrari 355 Broke down!!

and none made me feel special like the TVR and although I was'nt over impressed with my first test drive in a Tuscan, after taking out another (red rose) I am bowled over with TVR once again, I can't let reliability isues put me off after seeing what else is on offer, I am going to purchase one knowing I might/will have problems at some point, but I dont care, I would prefer 1 year of trouble with this car than 4 years trouble free motoring in one of these other so called enthusiasts cars, I feel they are dull and lifeless compared to the Tuscan.

So thanks again to everyones input, I'm off to join the Tuscaneers.....

I quite like the look of the S2000 but I dont really know why anyone would willingly spend 27k on one when you can buy their Civic Type R for 10k less and have the same performance? (Ok, so the roof doesnt come off...) In fact I seem to remember on Driven the CTR actually beat the S2000 round the track
Shame your budget doesnt go a bit (ok, a lot) higher. Seems like your ideal car would be something like an Audi RS 4/6

first I have to say that I have loved the last 5 years owning the 2 x Chimaeras I've had, all in all 70k miles covered between the two models without a hitch, inc 2 x 2k mile round trips through europe, Peninsula in Devon have been more than efficient with all the servicing and upgrade needs, but alas it's time to move on to something with a little more luxury for those Europe trips, I have test driven the Tuscan and was dissapointed with noise and poise, Cerby I loved the drive but the roof thing is a problem, Tamora / T350T just does'nt do it visualy for me I'm afraid.

Soooo..... any thoughts within the 30 - 40k pound bracket that has:

A/c, elecy roof, min 0 - 100mph 14sec, bit of the old kudos but not to in yer face (Ferrari)

I have a list of Six so far to test drive over the next few months and they are:

SLK32 AMG
XKR Conv.
Z4 3.0i
Boxter 3.2
Corvette C5 conv.
M3 Conv.

Your input on this will be very helpfull as the Chimaera is going to be a real hard act to follow and I will really miss it when it goes.

Cheers, Nik
