Driving Euro holiday and need to know where to go!
Discussion
We are going to drive to Spain or Italy and makes sure we see some of France on the way back.
We'll be crossing from the South coast to either Dieppe or Caen in September and have 20 days to explore.
Can people recommend places to stay, roads to drive, places to eat and urm...whatever else they can!
We dont want to go ultra expensive but are looking for interesting places to stay where possible such as some small country hotels with a bit of character.
Do we need to book much ahead in late September?
Also, what beach areas are there to go to in Italy? I have only ever been to Rome and Latina.
Ferry booking takes place this weekend.
As much help as posts or emails gratefully accepted.

A good start would be Dover.... No seriosly have not been to Italy but i can Very highly recomend The american graveyard in either the Somme or, Jeesus i cant remember where the other one is sorry. But well worth the emotional aspect just for an hour or two. It realy makes you think about things..And you stop thinking about your own worries and troubles. Also venice, But as you say cheapish i would just pass through its silly money to stay, P.s. If you Stop in Rome Tell J.P. I promise i will call soon, He is such a joker.....(No Offence God)

Adam, if you head south you must stop at Lourdes - not only is it a lovely little town...
It's also just down the road from this
then once over the Pyrenees, you could drive East through the foothills, then back over into France and along the Med coast into Italy... nice!

Dusty
If you are going to go to Spain then head down to Biaritz via the Bordeaux region.
Contact Chateau Lafite or Chateau Latour in advance and ask for a tour as a prospective purchaser and after the tour say "Combien de? I can't afford your wine!" And go and buy some plonk down the road
If you are going to Italy head through Epernay (more
) and indulge yourself for one night at a Hotel called Le Briquiterie www.labriqueterie.com
And don't miss the opportunity to burble up the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. Do the tour of the Mercier as it is the best and buy a few bottles of fizzy pop from any number of champage houses.
And kick Chirac in the gonads en route.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Great so far. The only ferry prices I have found are £360 return but they are for very good morning and evening times. Id be glad to receive cheaper ferry deals.
I can see the pics burrian, they look great. I look forward to see the statue of the red Griff, it almost looks real but for being so shiny.

if your booking to dieppe, can i suggest you look at ferrysale.com as they have special offers for the seacat.you might need to wait till 3 weeks before but you can get a ticket each way for £29 including car and passengers.
we used it for le mans so september should be less busy.
Whats the deal with these prices? Are you only allowed to stay a week or something?

If you are in Charente weekend 17/18/19 Sept "The Circuit des Remparts" in Angouleme is an absolute must. Probably the best motor racing in Europe. Medieval French town and they race around the old ramparts, Bugattis, Gt's and all manner of interesting machinery.
And guess who's organising a fantastic trip there this year?!
See www.bonneroute.co.uk
If you go top to bottom in Spain, take in Sergovia and Toledo.
The route is just off the main route through the middle, turn right 100km before Madrid and do a semi-circle round and rejoin the main (E-5 I think) route to the south coast.
Some of the most 'Spanish' roads and villages await you. Superb!

There's also that village preserved as a memorial to the victims of some murdering Nazi scum.... in a bit of a rush, can't think of the place name...
Ian
The village is called Oradour sur Glane - see www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~fhs/oradour.htm
I have been there, and it is a very humbling and emotional experience.
They do ask you to dress respectfully, and quite rightly so.
