Advice time. I've a 1978 Taimar which during the 90's sometime was resprayed white, it was originally white but a slightly whiter white was used vs the older creamier white (still following me :-)

Well I have a few strone chips etc that need touching up but I have no idea what paint code it is? I just need a touch up pen size amount so any ideas on paint matching?

Take a small part off the car like the fuel cap and take it to your local motor factors or paint suppliers and they should be able to match it using a machine they have

Fuel cap will be chrome, so no good there, biggrin

Door is about the smallest painted item I can think of that could be removed, and it's still not very convenient. Need to find a place that can scan the paint outside rather than having to take a piece in to them.

Some motor factors still have the books of paint samples. Not quite as good as the machine but at least you don't have to take the door off. I doubt the independents will have thrown theirs away.

I thought the machine was portable, just drive the car there- why would you remove a door?

Never done it so was hoping someone else would comment on the actual tool used. I would assume in this day and age it would be a small portable gun device, like IR temp gauge or something, but you never know, biggrin

Its a bit bigger than that, the one used on mine was about the size of an underwater camera...and probably about as accurate wink

Cheers for all the sugguestions chaps

Decided to go with some scientific auto trader car matching

Step one, filter auto trader results for white cars in the 1990's on all main stream brands like vw, ford etc

Copy and paste as many car pictures into my pc and literally flick between pictures of my car and the autotrader results.

Have ID'd the 3 closest matches and bought said touch up sticks off eBay

Once they arrive will see if we have a match, early 90's ford escort appears to be the winner on paper. BMW alpine white was too white, likewise for VAG cars

Pretty low tech hey lol
