The Griff got voted number 75 in the 100 most popular cars ever on Men & motors now.
The funny thing is they said it cost £25000 new and £11000 now.
The journalists also said "it's a car for the enthusiast" which I suppose is true.
I wonder what will be number 1?

Grouch.

Yep, and the Corrado 76 and the Chimaera 64.

And our Elan was in there too at 87. Quite a hit rate.

I saw that.

I had to smile at the commentator who said "TVR owners aren't angry when their car breaks down, they're simply 'disappointed' - like they're child has got a D in an exam. It doesn't stop them loving it though. They're enthusiasts".

I couldn't believe it when the woman commenting on the Boxster, next at no. 74 said along the lines of "It's a car you hear coming and then turn round to see what it is..."

I thought "Pss off! I don't know of any Boxster having that effect no matter how good a car it is!!!"

Think she must have been talking about the Griff!!

yeah, but you don't hear a boxster coming unless something has gone badly wrong with it

Or the owner has the SS sports exhaust fitted ... at great expense.

In which case it sounds like a rough straight-six engine with a bag o'spanners making it's way out through the back end...

...(IMHO )

Come on, Painey, be reasonable. A lot of women like the lines and quality of the Boxster. No harm in that, and it doesn't mean they have warped judgement. Even an enthusiast like LK Setright thinks sport cars should be sleek and silent and comfortable, and that the current vogue for noisy, hard and elemental rockets retrogressive.

Grouch - what car made First Place, and where did the Boxster come on in the list?

Cheers.
LA.

Oh I've got nothing against Boxsters whatsoever, they're brilliant cars. All I meant was it's not the kind of car that usually MAKES people upon hearing it, stop in their tracks and look to see what it is. Unlike something along the lines of a griff with a sports exhaust!! Purely in that context I don't think you can compare the two.

Cheers - Chris

I don't know yet as they're only doing 20 per night. Number 1 will be on Sunday.
The Boxster was right next to the Griff at no: 74

I think a large pinch of salt is needed on this particular survey. It's worth noting that the Fiat 500 was one or two places above the Ferrari Enzo!

Why..? Surely it depends on the judging criteria…

The Fiat 500 (like the Mini and the Beetle) gave affordable motoring to the masses… so in realt terms did more for motoring than the Enzo has...

Actually as an owner I've listened to a few of the sports exhausts and I'm not too keekn either. Its not in the character of the car IMO. Now...wind it up on track to above 4Krpm and it makes a brilliant noise - but it could never be considered loud.

You do hear a Boxster coming...but not from half a mile away like a Griff/Chim.

Plus it is a far more cohesive design than the Enzo, plus it's been the fabric of daily life in Italy for half a century, plus people will probably know what a Fiat 500 is in another half a century, and vote for it in the 2054 issue of the Top 100 Greatest Cars collection, while the Enzo will only be remembered by a couple of sad carnerds like yours truly...

Fair point Don. The Boxter's just not that type of car, but then it was never meant to be. I agree that they still sound good.

There's some serious engineering gne into making that sound and I'm not sure why people would then go out and mod their Boxter's exhaust.

I was a bit concerned that my last post would be seen as open hostility against Boxters; which it wasn't meant to be. Thanks for your balanced response!

IIRC there wasn't any judging criterior, purely the viewers voted for what was considered their favourite and then the numbers tallied up at the end.. no rocket science..

I think its cos most women don't know one end of a car from the other, so they decided to build the ideal car for them. A car such that nobody could tell one from the other.
