I need an MBE black box type (941)needed just to run fuelling on single cylinder engine for college project. As this system is used on many late TVR's and I believe some have been replaced under warranty .Something cheap/faulty would probably do, and I'll take the chance of coaxing it back to life.

Can't help on the MBE front, but as it's a college project would MegaSquirt be more appropriate? Probably a lot cheaper and perhaps easier. I suspect you might be able to interest others at your college in taking the MS construction on as a project if you didn't fancy doing it yourself.

Err the TVR MBE boxes are in fact custom TVR specific derivatives. No good for what you want I'm afraid. Megasquirt would be a better choice I think.

Sorry I've not qualified this properly.
We already run the unit on an MBE 941 and I have all the mapping software but the ECU belongs to another car so we have to borrow it each time we use it.
The project is actually an Eco-marathon car that does 1600mpg and runs on propane gas, and we had help from TVR when we developed it.

1600mpg - are you serious.

When can you apply the technology to my car's pitiful 21mpg

Yes but it only has to average 15mpg.
Schumacher and VBH were driving one on 5th Gear the other week.
They only got about 400mpg though.

Even so the TVR ECUs are not the same as the 941s as they are modified to support the TVR engines. Before spending any money/time etc I would make sure that if you get a TVR box that it is compatible with what you already have.

Sorry, that should read 15mph.

I'll do some more homework on the ecu.
However, the programming software we use is the same as that used by TVR.

I'm not sure of the details of you project but it certainly is a versatile system that could well suit your requirements..

Have just looked at mega squirt and it seems a great package and am going to buy one.
Still want an MBE though as I can just plug it in and save all my installation/mapping work, including 10 hours on the smallest dyno you've ever seen.

Paul - if the MBE ECU has a black case, then it is a "regular" aftermarket version. TVR versions are always blue or silver/gold. The TVR software does NOT allow it to be mapped from a PC using MBE's EasiMap program.

Since these ECUs are quite sought-after, they tend to be very expensive in either version. Sadly this means it is unlikely that anyone will provide a free one, although it is always worth asking!

For a research project, it sounds like the MegaSquirt system could be right up your street. Since you have already developed the map, it shouldn't be too hard to translate it. Good Luck!
