Just wanted folks opinions on wiring in a multichanger into the boot of my Griffith, having just acquired said item.

Will need a permanent live and was wondering where others have sourced that live from. I could go straight from the battery .... but any other suggestions.

As for the earth ... no problem, lights.

Mounting point ... My dad's is on top of the fuel tank in the middle of the pull out cover in his Chimaera and I was thinking the same thing in the Griffith. Any other ideas ??

Cheers

Mark

I think on the pioneer unit the live take off is at the stereo end? If so there should be a bullet type connector in the yellow wire in the wiring harness from the stereo, this is so you can power the multi changer, the earth however is taken from the changer end so needs to be earthed close to the mounting point!

Will be investigating how route the wiring soon as want to get those back speakers in mine and the cabling needs upgrading!

Depending on the size of the changer, if you install it on top of the fuel tank it may get in the way of the roof panel. That location works fine in the Chimaera as the panel goes in the other way round (i.e. wraps around the tank) whilst the in Griff it bows towards the tank in the middle. A small changer my fit ok though.

Mine had (till I swapped it for a Sony one) a factory fit Pioneer changer screwed to a carpeted panel which is attached to the left rear vertical panel of the boot itself (i.e the behind and to the side of the number plate). The panel is held on at one end by a bolt which goes through the boot wall in the number plate recess (visible when you take the plate off), and velcro on the other end.

Regards

Andy

Forgot to mention routing for cables....

easiest way I found was to pass your cables through to the cabin from the left (n/s) of the boot - over the wheel arch. You can then grab them from the access panel in the door pillar above the seat belt reel. Don't forget to scratch your hands to buggery on the rough fibreglass!

From there you can run the cables under the carpet under the passenger seat and into the footwell - you might need to pull the carpet up a bit if its all still securely stuck down.

It may be worth having a poke around in the door pillar as I think some cars were wired with connectors for rear speakers up to that point.

If not its a relatively easy job putting new cables in.

most changers take the power from the head unit in a nice fat cable that does all the controls aswell, there should be just two leads one for power/control the other for the returning sound to the head unit,(you may have a little earth wire too)

Hi Mark, I have a Pioneer 6 x stack CD changer fitted by the factory together with an amplifier for the rear speakers. Mine is positioned upright centrally with the amp alongside, velcro'd to the gray carpet bulkhead board. The roof fits no problems (as has been said this goes in fabric side forward, front edge down). Cables run over the nsr wheel arch and through the cavity in the sill. I will post a picture or two tomorrow morning if you want? Rich...

Paul, do you know if there is a permanent live at the CD changer end i.e. in the boot? Rich...

Normally on a Pioneer changer the live will be in the white plug that has the earth and live. Other than this I don't think so.

Rich, if you have an amp in the boot then there is certainly a permenant feed to it, along with a turn on signal from the head unit. Boot opening???

Mines above the fuel tank, just right of centre and the roof just missis it by mm when putting it in the boot.
How about putting it behind one of the seats.less cable to feed about and easy access to change the CD'S. Unfortunatly easier for Thieves but the alarm should cover that anyhow.

My Sony 10-disc changer gets all its power from the umbilical to the head unit. There's a twin coaxial carrying the audio back to the head unit.

The later Wedges had a set of wires in the boot to power an electric aerial: on my car there's a silly little wire aerial on the wing and anyway I never listen to the radio, so I made some changes....
There's a switched 12V, but no permanent 12V. So I pulled the blue wire that would control the aerial, and wired it to permaanent 12V. Then I added a relay, triggered by the switch for the alarm system, so now when you open the boot, the boot courtesy lamps come on without needing to have the car sidelights on as well (bloody stupid idea that was...).

On the pioneer changer there is an orange at the headunit end which needs a contant live , you should be able to plug in on the supply to the headunit on a bullet connector as previously said the earth is at the changer end so just find and earthing point in the boot , why pioneer havent incorporated the live and earth in to the ip bus cable is beyond me kenwood alpine sony can so why cant they

I think the orange wire is the illumination wire so it lights up when you turn your lights on, yellow is permanent live, red switched, black earth and blue is the remote wire.

Cheers all for your replies ... I will be tackling it this weekend and will let you know how I get on ...

The wire provided has the cable for the headunit and stuck onto the side of it is the live lead which needs the permanent live. Which I am hoping to find a home for other than straight to the battery.

Earth to the light circuit and then I will see where I mount the thing ....

Thanks all for you responses. Been away slumming it in Edinburgh for a few days ...

My mate Rob's dad's new Epsrit is definitely sitting at the dealers waiting for himk to collect it ... Black with a black interior and tinted windows.

Somehow he is resisting the urge to collect it until March when the weather is better as this is when it was booked for delivery ! How can he do it !

As for the odd T350 that's slipped into the network .... well .... I will be taking one for a test drive, but not for a couple of months yet.

March! Obviously not overly excited about getting it then, a bit too sensible!

To be fair he can't wait. This bloke has had a few nice cars in his time .... Integralle, T5, Ferrari 328 in the garage currently and using a Maserati Ghible cup as his run around at the moment .... So he's not suffering too much

Here's a tip,
forget the multichanger. I've got a sony cd/mp3 player head unit in my 350i. I can copy 15 albums onto 1 disc and leave it in the head unit all the time. advantages: cheaper ( mine ost £150 from empire.com, although it's £240 from argos). saves space,no extra wiring.Carry file with 10 Cds in and you have a 150 album collection in your tiv.
