Hello,

Track Day advice: Simple questions
Tuscan MK2, 4.0L

I have the guts to go to my home circuit Spa-Francorchamps for my first track day experience, organized by Andy (Monspa) end of may (31th).

Following the rules:

1. Dealer check-up
New brakes, 8L oil Castrol 10w60, special clutch and brake oil = silicone version?
Engine service at 9500 miles
2. Ordered four new tires (Goodyear F1) for AFTER the track day
3. Helmet
4. Insurance
5. ……..

Some advice & help

a. Do I need some extra car protection tools: special tape, …… ?
b. Clothing & shoes?
c. Speed six related concerns? It’s the first time – I hope – that she will do more then 5000 and more rev’s continuously
d. Camera advice?
e. ……

Many thanks in advance,

koen

Hey Koen,

I'll email the welcome pack off line, but to answer your questions...

a, not really. some tape lights etc but its not required. Little change of stonechips and the like as its a clean GP track with hi-grip tarmac in many places rather than gravel, and its 4 miles long so no traffic!

b, no special clothing required other than helmet and long sleeves. many wear race shoes for extra control and some wear race suits for fire protection should the unthinkable happen...or just to look like racing drivers!!!
any of the above is ok at Spa.

c, Speed six should be fine if run in well. you can drive at your own speed. as with ALL engines/cars, start slowly and build your speed...then slow down properly for cool down laps and oil circulation. (remember we have TVR mechanics on site!) bed your brakes in well BEFORE the day and 20mins tops on track, its a road car after all! there will be full briefing before the track.

d, vid-cameras. are ok if mounted on "proper secure camera mounts". No broomsticks and gaffa tape! Photography is also OK, we have a photographer on site.

e, Chill out, pace yourself and enjoy your day. let me do the worrying!

edited to say, silicon is not need for brakes, but we recommend Dot5 for track work (V high temp fluid)and bedded in pads.

You mean Dot 5.1 - surely?

Dot 5.0 is silicone based and totally incompatible with other fluids.

Hi,

What is the advantage of silicone?

Question: on a track day

a. with or without top
b. without top and rear window

Why or why not?

- Safety reasons
- For me, I'm 1.91m and I can't hear the engine anymore above 100 miles because the wind noise. May be it's less noisy with the rear window out.

just a thought,

silicon doesn't absorb moisture so won't need changing. but not sure about its Hi temp properties. race teams use 5.1 not aware of anyone using silicon...

track = roof off, window out.

you'll love it! you should be pushing 130mph at Les Combe 160 in mine
