Oil consumption for 5L Chim/Griff

I'm trying to get an idea on the oil usage of the 5L engine - I suspect mine is not well at approx 1L per 320miles as I hear that it should be better than 1L per 1000miles. The engine has covered 36k but had a rebuild recently with many new parts. There are no leaks but I have seen some smoke on starting occasionally.
So, how much oil does yours use?

If you use them hard they use alot more oil than if you don't. If you backed madness off you woul notice it improve. But 0/40 is not really suitable for these older style engines - go to 15/40 and it will be better for the same level of driving. They run way to low oil pressure with that crap in.
Ian at TorqueRVT, who knows a bit about these motors, suggested I change from semi to fully mineral for a couple of thousand miles, to roughen up the bores or summat; which I did; and then back to 10:40 semi, which I have. Made no difference atall. Just under 1 litre: 1 thousand miles. Not sure about the smoke bit - certainly didnt notice any even when on fully mineral.
I do enjoy taking the engine to 5000 rpm once warm regularly, mainly to accelerate for short bursts; but no racing and DEFO no red lining, no sirree.
So I guess I could try and keep things under 4thou rpm for the next few hundred and see what we find.

Maybe the 5L is genuinely different, but my previous 4L Chim never needed topping up. Not in 5 years and 36k miles. And you are talking about 3 litres per 1000 miles - that ain't right.
You should not really be using Mobil 1, it certainly isn't necessary for these low-revving V8s. Perhaps this is the cause of your high oil-burn ?
I'd have a word with your dealer - mine certainly recommended old-school mineral oil, not sure of the rating.

Did they also tell you not to rev it above 1,000rpm?Typical consumption for a 5.0 is around 1L per 1000 miles. The smaller engines lose much less. My 4.0 used about 1L per 5000 road miles, but the consumption rose sharply on track. Jon's right that 0/40 is too thin, but when the engine is working hard it is really only the hot rating that matters - 0/40 and 15/40 are more or less equivalent by the time the oil has got to 100C.
If you have a new engine that hasn't been bedded in, the oil consumption is likely to be much, much higher. It'll improve as the rings bed in. I suggest you don't start to think about oil consumption for the first 5k miles after the rebuild, and don't worry about it too much until you get to 10K.

Through the three 5 litre tivs i've had now,i've found varying degrees of consumption.The first chimaera used to use very little(didn't measure)when i first had it,then started to use a lot quite suddenly(again didn't really measure it),i then sold it before investigating further.My first griff used very little,maybe 3-400ml/1000 miles,and so did my present one until recently,when oil consumption started to rise a bit(800ml/1000 miles).I'm not sure if the increase in consumtion is due to a different oil brand,which occured at same time,but i would be surprised if it was the case.I'm now running a full mineral oil until my next service,in an attempt to 'un stick' the rings/de-glaze the bores,if that was what was starting to occur.Already,since switching to the mineral(2k miles)i can tell theres less consumtion.It'll be interesting to see if consumtion goes back up when i have my service in 1.5k miles time,as i'll try going back to the synthetic then.
All synthetic oils used have been 15/50 or 10/50,and the mineral i'm now using is 10/40 btw.

im using 10/40 semi (as recommended) but i cant guarantee what was in it before.... It had a rebuild because it was using 1L per 180 miles apparently oil leaking through valve stem/seat??? (im not technical!). I guess that at 320miles/1L is better but I dont think that it is correct yet!...

Thats interesting.My Chim had knackered bottom end bearings(both sets)down to the copper at 42k miles!The dealer i bought it from recommended 0/40 Mobil 1,and they had serviced it most of its life.Fortunately i had more advice to use the 15/50 so went with that.Looks like it could have been the reason the bearings went at such a relatively low mileage perhaps? chim7878 said:

My Griff 500 was using 1L of oil every 4-500 miles on Shell Helix 10W40 ..... now with Silkolene 10W50 in it instead it has only used about 1/3rd of that in the 600 miles since the oil was changed, maybe even less. I don't seem to have put any significant amount in it at all .....
I don't know how much of this 'change' is down to the oil though as I had work was done on the engine at the same time as the service which now sees it running 28 degrees ignition advance as opposed to the 21 degrees previously ..... the engine now being so much happier and smooth I think this must have had an effect on the oil consumption too.
