Hello - can anybody give me an idea of the cost for a full respray - and also recommendations of companies in the Surrey / Hants / Berks area who could do the work? I've seen a Chimaera that I like for a v. good price - but the down side is the bodywork..........
Thanks in advance....

A re-spray IIRC is around £500 for labour, the paint is the main cost, Red glow pearl is around £500 a ltr.
4 ltr's to do a car, therefore a full re-spray you would be looking at around £2500!

I just bought a litre of Red Glow - its £276 inc. VAT and postage to me from the dealer. My car is booked into a good bodyshop for a nose job/new headlight lens covers at the end of September.

I can recommend Carmichael Sport Cars in Hampshire (Romsey). His phone number is 01794 367555. Had some work done there in the past, and have been very pleased with the result. To give you an idea of quality of his work, and number of his restorations have been show winners.

Agreed. The difference between a good respray and an (eventually) crap one is the work you put in before you even open the paint tin.

A couple of miles outside your area, but Ewelme coachworks in Oxfordshire seem to be who a lot of TVR owners trust. They did the front end of mine after some muppet reversed into it.

The price from the factory is around £120 per 1/2 litre. Not sure exactly, but my dealer charged me the above inc. VAT and postage to me (since I live 90 smiles away from them). The dealer is Hendry's in Malmsbury.

So is your dealer quoting £500? Maybe that's a guess and they've not checked?

You pays your money, you takes your choice. Mine is currently in having a full respray, was reversed in to by some numpty and so while his insureres are paying for some I thought I'd cough up for the rest.
Earlier this year I got some quotes from indies and main dealers and they ranged from £2500 cash-in-hand to about £4000 for what I call a proper job. As TVRGIT said, it's all about the work put in at the begining. The lower end of the market will tape up stuff and spray round, the upper end will do as mine are doing and remove everything and spray up to the rubber or black under the bonnet and they will take their time over it too making sure the car is perfect before doing the final spray.
While you are at it you may as well get the wheels refurbished - about £60 a corner, wil finishit off nicely. so in my opinion, don't go cheap on the main job. Mines will be aroud the 4K mark, plus the wheel refurb. Then I need to replace the rear suspension as I have a leaking strut, then it needs a 6k service and the carpets will get a tidy up too - car should look like new when I get it back - bank account will look empty!

Liphook coachworks are doing mine and I think they are top guys. Never mind if I pop in to see how it is going and even spent 2 hours with me the other day discussing colour variations and had sprayed up 5 or 6 cards in varying shades for me to look over. Can't fault them.

I had mine done at Ewelme, very good.

As said, anyone who does it for less that a grand, will cover your car in masking tape.

Other places will remove your glass, lights etc & it gets quite labour intensive.

I have the Ewelme quote in front of me for a full respray in my colour. £2450 + 950 paint & materials + VAT = £3995. They wanted £1468inc for a front end only.

I've decided to use Specialised Paintwork in Reading who I've used twice before on other cars. They do loads of Lotuses and Porsches. Quote = £800 + VAT and I supply the paint = £940 + £276 = £1216. Still not cheap but they are good.

I'm sure Ewelme are A1 quality too. But wasn't prepared to pay that much more consdiering I expect the same quality from Specialised Paintwork.

For either I'd also have to supply the headlamp lens covers £56 + VAT each.

Phil,
I did a bunch of research on this last year for the griff: good advice here on PH then went and talked to a couple of garages direct: Prices varied from about £1.5K -minimum prep work, masking tape and not much else:One guy suggested they could do it with the hood in situe! to £4K - full rub down, deep prep where neeed, hood, doors, boot, bonnet, headlamp covers off,all surrounds painted, inc the nasty bits around the griff door handles that you dont see. The two quotes were like "chalk and cheese" and it really depends on A/ how bad the car is, what it needs and B/ how 'perfect' a job you want & do visit the garages:- At one there were 6 TVR's. They were knowledgable about working with GRP and with TVR's, completed jobs looked good and they were happy to spend time talking about the options: At another I saw an MGB painted with what looked like small boulders embedded in the paint on the roof, "that'll polish out no problem":I went closer to the £4K option and after some negotiation-including timing on when it was done, got what I felt was a good price for what I wanted:I think you need to ask yourself how much you want (can afford) because there are very different resprays out there: Mine was done during Jan this year, was invited to have a look when the work was being done and they took photos for me of before during and after:I was very pleased with the results:

I had a front end job on my old Chimaera which IIRC was about 800 quid with everything perfectly drifted so you'd never know it was done. Transformed the car from a stonechipped mess to looking brand new! Admittedly there was an element of mate of a mates rates as the guy who did it was a good sprayer recommended to me but a friend who's also a sprayer & could vouch for his work. He had GRP spraying experience which apparently is vital!! Don't get it done by someone who only has experience with metal.

Hi

I bought my '98 400 in March. She was in excellent order apart from a stone chipped front end. On the second day of ownership some tart scratched the door which prompted me to have the car reprayed in Porsche Irish Blue. It took the body shop in Chichester a week at a cost of £800, give or take a few quid. After 6 weeks they repolished it to account for the paint ' settling '. The paint job is superb, it positive shimmers in sunlight.
When I get round to replacing the driver seat cover I reckon she'll be A1.
