fuel tank expansion noise

Just had my Chimaera MOT'd and it had to have a new petrol filler cap, because the seal had worn out, so I opted for a Leven Technoogies one.

When I picked the car up I heard a loud bang as soon as I started the car. This happened again that evening and the next morning.

Yesterday when I filled the ar up with petrol, I heard the same bang when I undid the new petrol cap.

If I use the old one, the noise does not occur, so I guess that some sort of air-lock is causing the problem.

Its a blockage to do with the charcoal cannister in the front wing.. they filter the tank vent gasses and need some tlc occaisionally.. also the pipe to the cannister could be crimped or something.

some people drill a hole in the filler cap to stop this, however that doesn't solve the actual problem.

I get this too on my griff. The first time it happened i honestly thought that some one had driven into the arse end without the impact. Don't ya just love em.

PS Mine does it too by the way.. I just havent got round to getting the charcoal cannister out of the car wing.. this is a really common problem The Dealer should have sorted this out/known about the cannister..!
