TVR Thunder Run hits London

Help keep TVR British this Sunday

A thunder of TVRs
A thunder of TVRs
The TVR London Thunder run takes place this Sunday. The number of cars likely to attend looks set to be around 300 or more as the firm's fans gather for a protest in London over TVR's proposed move abroad.

The iconically British maker of rumbling sports cars is set to move production overseas - rumoured to be to Italy. TVR owners and others involved in different ways with the company see this rally as a way of showing the strength of feeling about the move.

According to the organisers, there are two key objectives for the rally and to help maintain and further raise the profile of the factory closure, and associated job losses, and to hold the largest ever gathering of TVRs.

The day will include:

 • Several convoys from around the country to London.
 • Transport for factory workers, and families from Blackpool to London. 104 TVR workers said they plan to attend.
 • A convoy through London, including a parade down Whitehall.
 • Petition presentation - along the lines of "Keep TVR British", to be presented to Downing Street at 1400. Three cars will been allowed to enter and park outside Number 10.
 • The rally will then head in convoy to the Ace Café on the Old North Circular Road, before departing for home.

TVRcarparts.com has also said that it'll be going along to add support and to offer essential parts and mechanical backup from Dulford Automotive.

I'm all for the cause, but you have to chuckle at the prospect of London being littered with broken down TVRs.

I still hope to own one someday, just hope it will be a fine example of BRITISH engineering.

Maybe its a good idea to build all the RHD TVR's in the UK(thats also where the most TVR cars(RHD) go anyway, so ideal place to sell from there and you dont have to ship them there so cheaper anyway)

And build all the LHD cars in Italy also bring out the first new cars from the "new" headquarter in Italy where they design the new cars...then later build the same(but then RHD) in the UK? so both and all could be happyyes

So that way TVR still could link a lot as a English sportcar at least the RHD excamples but also could bring some exotica from Italy...then it could be up to you where your heart lays the most, for me it would make no differance as long as its a good TVR and has a big V8 in it hehe and makes me feel good and with a big driving them.

That also means to factorys to run...but if they keep it a little low in staff people and give them self more justification to themselfs(responsebility?) so they could run and proove they can be profitable too? then why not....

I understand the sentiment behind this and it should be spectacular (how did you get permission to drive down Downing St?!), but I don't really see what it is supposed to achieve.

You can blame this government for a LOT of things, (and I do) but the moving of TVR abroad really isn't one of them. Maybe you should be blockading Smollensky's pad (if he's over here at the moment) or Peter Wheeler's?

Ah, slight problem here, there is a route clash with the "Keep the BSA Bantam British" rally which left Downing Street in 1977 and is still heading for the Ace Cafe.... Hear the mighty rumble of those throbbing two-strokes (I think the baffles have worked loose again).

Take a look at www.benelli.com/eng/azienda.asp to see the plans for the size of workforce in the Italian Benelli operation, recently owned by NS but now sold on to the Chinese if I understand correctly(?). I notice here that the President of Benelli is one Mr. Lin Hua Zhong - will he also be running TVR in due course? The Chinese have rather developed a taste for buying British car companies which had great engineering but were run into the ground by wasters. Interestingly, Benelli now sources some of its engines and parts in China, from the well-known Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Co. (who they? ed.) - can we assume that the same will be true for our beloved TVRs? I think we should be told.

I don't know about you but I simply can't wait to see the Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Co. copy of the speed six in action!

HM Government has the power to stop important works of art being sold abroad but not, it seems, important intellectual property, engineering expertise, brands or indeed jobs. So by all means let them know this is one sale they MUST block.

And where is Lawrence Tomlinson? Wouldn't the TVR brand fit well with his current (Northern based) Ginetta and Panoz operations? He was a friend of TVR once, having raced their products extensively. Surely with some help and encouragement from the DTI something could be done?

Thanks for taking the time to make your post, but can i recommend that you spend a little reading the threads.

No-one has blamed the government, this is not a protest, and we are not bashing the TVR management.

If there is someone out there (and I think a high possibility) that believes that they could make a better stab at owning and running TVR then I think the event on Sunday can only help sway them, even if just a tiny amount, to consider the idea further.

That's my hope. I also want to say a thank you to the work force who have kept loyal and produced some of the best cars TVR have ever made despite all the uncertainties - just incase this really is the end.

Furry muff. But just reading the news piece, the bit about parading down Whitehall and handing in a petition to 10 Downing St suggested there were political motives...

Have a great day and I'm looking forward to seeing it in the news!

You're right you know, anyone who thinks Sunday is a waste of time is completely missing the point. It will be a good crack, a landmark event & who knows, may even lift the profile enough to prevent emmigration of the marque,
