Maybe not the right area to post this in but here goes.

Can anybody give some driving tips for track daying the Chimp, particularly round the twisty bits, I'm going to Bruntingthorpe so any local knowledge will help.

Cheers

Paul

Excuse the thread hijack....

Did you get the misfire problem sorted? Mines started misfiring at 4000rpm so off to see Mark Adams on Tuesday for a rr session (and chip while we're at it most likely!).

Don't try to be fast. Concentrate on driving smoothly and improving your lines, and let the speed build up naturally. If you get a chance to take an instructor round, grab it and listen to what they have to say.

Don't use the handbrake, keep the bonnet open between sessions. Check the tyre temperatures after each session, if they are uncomfortably warm slow down or have shorter sessions. Keep an eye on tyre and brake wear throughout the day. Be as gentle on the brakes as you can, especially at the end of the main straight.

Stones are only a problem at Bruntingthorpe on the main straight. If you folow people closely you stand to lose a lot of paint here. Better to drop back or move to one side.

Finally, if you find you're approaching a corner and not absolutely sure you're going to make it round: slow down; you're pushing too hard.

Thanks all. I take heed!

Hi Mark. I have finally got the car running well, the last thing I checked was the exhaust and found the manifold to Y section brackets quite loose, I think this was affecting the HEGO sensor readings and hence the amount of fuel injected. I've also stopped holding the throttle open slightly on the overrun(except on TVR meets!) , no more popping and banging from me, but the car seems better for it.

Definitely get an instructor session. I can't recommend this enough. You will improve dramatically, especially if this is your first track day.

Make sure your oil level is at the top and take 1/2 a litre with you. Check it after every session (let the engine cool a bit first and the oil drain back into the sump). Top up as nesseccary

Take your last lap slowly to let the brakes cool off, i.e. use them as little as possible.

DON'T PUT THE HANDBRAKE ON AFTER A SESSION! You WILL warp the disks or worse.

Leave plenty of space to the car in front especially under braking. I was following an Elise who was following Griff down to a hair pin bend. The Griff lost it under braking and speared across the track, through the cones and across the inside of the bend. If the 3 of us had been closer it could have got nasty. Cars spinning in front of you is not a nice feeling.

Take some food and water.

FInd the nearest petrol station. You'll need it

Most of all, have fun. No cops or cars coming the wrong way. It's fantastic.

Well I've done it and the car survived, I now have aching facial muscles and a permanent grin!

The weather was perfect and the car behaved itself all day, boy does it handle like nothing else. We had 15 cars/bikes and the top end of bruntingthorpe to ourselves all day with a few spins, 1 midday tyre replacement on a clio sport a trip for fuel and no casualties, excellent!

Only just saw this, I would have said everything everybody else said

I too had a fantastic day, it was ideal weather as it was rainy and wet in the morning. Took the fast left hander after the pits a little ambitously and ended up spinning a few times across the grass. Made everyones day including mine

The afternoon it dried out and I and the car faired much better. Cooked the tyres a little but there now 'scrubbed' in.

I think we went when it was the GTM owners club day out (review of the GTM Spyder currently on front page), they did ok. Would pick an Elise over a GTM though.

Hopefully do another one later in the summer.
