Just read that BP are launching a rival to Shells Optimax performance fuel.
Its called Ultimate and will be available at 400 outlets from January.

Wonder if it will start a performance fuel pricing war?

Just called BP careline and the octane rating for BP Ultimate Petrol is going to be 97RON. Optimax is 98RON.
Think I'll stick with Shell. Althoug if BP is cheaper I may give it a go.

Taken from the BP website in Australia...
BP Aus said:
BP Ultimate™ starts where the other petrols finish. It's a very powerful, high octane (98 RON), unleaded fuel that maximizes engine power and performance. BP Ultimate's unique formula also produces less pollution than any other Australian petrol.
Don't know if this is going to be what UK BP sell though....can only presume.

There's another fuel by Shell, currently in Germany called v-power rated at 100RON....looking at the Shell forums, the Jap performance car users in UK are begging to use this fuel, rather than adding 'octane booster' stuff.

Just had a look at the BP UK site and found this

"BP Ultimate Unleaded has a research octane level of 97, which is higher than standard unleaded petrol, which has a research octane level of 95. This, on average, gives increased power in certain vehicles."

Looks like Optimax is still my personal preference.

Looking at the BP website it looks like it is only going to be 97 RON in the UK. Think I'll stick with Optimax.

That's no different than normal SUL.

Funny how petrol has turned into a "soap powder" product - same old cp, just put a different label on it and you'll sell three times as much!

I live in devon and there dont seem to be many optimax stations around, what does everyone recommend as an alternative to optimax?

IIRC petrol tax is levied on the octane content, so the more RON it's got, the more £ you pay. Hence there's a limit to how competitve the price can get.

Mazola and meths anyone?

My local BP filling station sells 98 RON (hardly any others do - most are only 97 if at all!). I've always been confused by the disparate offerings at the BP stations.

- Why can't we have it (probably the tax equation would make it too expensive????)

BP New Zealand do. The UK stuff is refined in the UK, and so will be different.
