What is it with Dealers?
Discussion
I am trying to sell my Chim and buy a Cerb, either as p/x or as a private sale.
I happen to spot a 'perfect' Cerb for sale at a TVR dealer very local to where I am at the moment. It's a fiver short of £40k, so not the sort of thing you shift every day. I ring them up and speak to the 'salesman'. Immediately he tells me that they are making a loss on the Cerb (I don't think so). I explain about my Chim and give him the details, as we progress through the mileage, PAS or not, etc, etc. I can feel him going clean off the idea of a deal. He really can't be bothered. I am realistic as to the value of my car and he might well be able to talk me into the Cerb, but it's clear he doesn't even want to try.
To me, the way to do it would have been 'come down, see what you think of the Cerb, I'll take a look at the Chimaera, but to be honest, we already have X so it might be better to sell it privately or we will offer you X' In other words, honest from the word go, rather than the go away we're not interested.
He's just rung me back and offered a derisory sum for my car (without seeing it) and only going on the mileage and colour. He didn't even know if it had a service history, any modifications/improvements,etc. He also admitted he has never sold a Chimaera with 52k miles before so doesn't know how it would go. He also said he would rather hold on to the Cerb and wait for someone to come in and buy it for cash.
Is it me or did the 'salesman' handle this very badly? No wonder some TVR dealerships have a bad name. I just don't appreciate how wonderful ******** are sometimes

Hi,
That seems true of every 'salesman' i have ever had contact with. If you are taking cash with no part ex they'll jump through hoops, roll over and then keep pestering you on the phone for the sale.
But....add a part ex into the situation and then they offer you a completly crap deal or are just not interested.
An example of this...back in 97 i brought a 4 month old Honda Civic Coupe SRI V-tec full Honda motorsport factory kit lurvly car. Integra looks and performance but a bit bigger. Six months later i need to change it for a 4x4 to tow things and went back to the dealer to see if they might buy it back. I had originally paid 11,995 for it he offered me 6,995. He had a similar (lesser) model on the forecourt for 11,500. When questioned about the profit margin he explained they had to valit it a do a service and offer a warrenty.
W****ers the lot of them.

Bought three TVR's of three different dealerships and had exactly the same "what do you want" attitude

Thanks for the replies chaps. I thought it might have been me. I know the dealers have to 'filter' the tyre kickers, but surely to be so downright hostile is only doing them harm. I thought about asking how many new or used TVR's he'd sold this week, clearly he'd had such a good week he is off to the Bahamas to retire.
Perhaps it's just that the salespeople have no interest in the marque and think they have a moral high ground ' you take it or leave it, after all you can't just go down the road and buy the car somewhere else'.
This is where the 'good' dealers and indies build such a reputation. At least they take the line of if they can't help you this time, they will next time.

Sounds like a lousy salesman to me.
My experience was totally the opposite. Traded a much more difficult p/ex (1964 E-Type) which the dealer took and retailed off his forecourt and I had a very good deal with him. Dealt with the owner of the dealership which I think always helps.
My experience with my TVR dealer (HHC Harrogate) has been very positive from the moment I walked in the showroom, through numerous test drives, a good deal and great service from the after sales people.
It's a shame that TVR seems to attract some dealers who don't offer the level of service that they should, which seems to negatively affect those that are very good.

i've been to a few dealers and within minutes you can tell whether they are there because they love the tvr marque or if they are just there because its a job and they are selling tvr cars or something.
it makes me laugh when some snotty salesman/women looks down their nose at you like they've just stepped in something dirty,i mean they work there!the majority of them can't afford one!!
i know there are timewasters around but manners cost nothing

Snap with their sister company at Hexham.
All very enthusiastic about TVRs, and nicer people you could not meet
Fish travels 200 miles each trip to take the car their for servicing, should go some way to show how highly we think of them

The dealer has just rung me back. I told him he was wasting my time, and he had the gall to suggest that obviously we were too far apart on the money! I explained that it wasn't that at all, yes, I might get more elsewhere, but he had the car I want. I told him it was the totally negative attitude from the word go and my total astonishment that he was prepared to value a 'prestige' car such as a TVR over the phone! We all know each are different so how that is possible I don't know. He then back tracked at a thousand miles an hour and asked if we could start again. He also said that the derisory offer for my car was subject to them having a look at it (so they could knock even more off presumably).
Why oh why didn't he just ask to see my car from the word go? And be more POSITIVE!

HHC have an 02 52 4.5 Cerb in Red Bull Blue with 3k miles on the clock up for £39950 at the moment. See www.hhctvr.co.uk
You could always give them a bell if it's the spec you want.

Talk to James Agger - let him source what you are looking for and get it checked. Decent guy, keen to make the sale but not at any price, knows his stuff and is available afterwards if there are problems or niggles. Chances are he can help you on the sale of the Chim - has plenty of contacts through the enthusiasts and TVR Club. Well worth a phone call.
If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait until the alledged new TVR model is announced at the motor show. I dont think anyone has said for defo what its going to be yet (correct me if I'm wrong) but I'd bet my last quid its something to replace the cerb. Wait until thats in production and see how many cerbs suddenly appear on the market and what happens to their prices.

I dont use HHC but i know Tony very well and he is absolutely first class...he makes you feel like a long lost pal

I had the same crappy experience when trying to part ex my Chim 450 with dealers for a Tamora, One dealer said between 13 and 14K (by email, without ever looking at the car, which btw, was/is in perfect running order and condition), and the next dealer was alittle better, but odd!!
I emailed them a brief history of my car, along with all the specs, including pics. I also said I have 12K to make the difference for a Tam priced at £30,995. The email back stated that if I were to go to 14K with the Chim, we'd have a deal. However, that W/E I sold the Chim, and duly rang the dealers back up with an offer of £28500 cash,,, no go,, a grumpy guy told me that £30,995 was the price if I wanted the car!!!He didnt compramise one iota, even with cash! So,, I gave up on them, and ended up buying a newer Tamora, same milage, but with air con, 18" spiders, traker, multi CD player, for, in the end, £27,650!
TVR dealers are a funny lot,, but, then again, most dealers are I guess!
