Can you have your cake and eat it ? i.e buy privately (with of course a professional inspection) and then purchase a warranty which surely is esentially just another form of insurance - anybody done this?

A source of constant debate - yes you can, and there are a few "resident experts" (such as pies!) try a search for this subject

For example: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=5&h=&t=32590 was a recent debate.....

You're getting to know about as much as anyone else - i.e. it's a nightmare to decide whether it's worthwhile or not!

"Dropacog" happens to be a legal beagle and he can't easily decide whether they're worth the paper they're written on!!!!

My understanding was that RAC don't or if they do it'll be expensive. Warrenty Holdings (unhelpful when the money needs to come your way, don't). AA cover parts & labour for breakdown for very little money. Ring them

I bought my Cerbera privately and then took the car to my local dealer (HHC). They then did a one hour pre-warranty inspection before issuing a TVR warranty. Check out the prices I paid on my profile running costs. Hope this helps.
