When spraying cellulose I've found the 50:50 mix on the primer and initial base coats of colour fine but then thin down the paint further nearer 30:70 on the last couple of top coats. Always worked fine for me!

yes 70/30 should be OK but make sure the finishing colour is thinned with TOP GLOSS thinners and not standard, you'll get a much better finish.

last time i did a bit of spraying i ended up with it a bit 'orange peel' effect so when i was washing out my gun i sprayed a light coat of top gloss thinners over the surface before it had dried completely and it levelled out the finish to an acceptable level without the need to flat with 1200 and polish, this was an experiment that seemed to work out OK,

I agree, it's better to use a good quality thinners for the top coats. I've had problems before when spraying in the garage at home (especially during winter time)of the paint finish Blooming due to the temperature/humidity. You can get a good quality Anti-Bloom thinners which will help get a good finish.

The paint can come in a variety of viscosities

It's best to add enought thinners to make it "just right"

If you don't know how thick this is, get someone else to mix it or experiment

Per the manufacturer's instructions perhaps? The shop where you bought the paint should be able to supply. Most paint makers have a website.

Here in the States, all the paint/thinner I have personally seen has the mixing ratio right there on the can. Measure, don't guess, and stir thoroughly. You won't get a second chance later! You can get a viscosity meter, a simple plastic cup on a stick with a calibrated hole in the bottom, if you want, to check the correct viscosity.

I'd suggest using the same brand thinner and paint. PPG and DuPont both make good stuff, but I doubt they stay up nights and weekends working on cross-compatability between their various paints and thinners.

but dont forget to ask for the proper breathing apparatus you're going to need for your own safety,

carbon filter masks are OK for cellulose and easier to use

isocyanates can damage lungs.

cellulose is easier to use for the DIY man and is more forgivable,
i.e. any runs,'orange peel' can be flattened down with 1200 grade wet & dry and then polished to a good finish.

isocyanates

CAN! be flattened if neccessary albeit very hard work, may be easier to flat and respray
oil based! you mean like DULUX?

check out www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg388.pdf
or www.hse.gov.uk/mvr/main-illhealthhealth.htm

then make your own mind up, after reading that you might actually prefer to use oil based.

Precisley!

Old vans and lorry's are fine to use oil based or coach enamel on but there's been no mention of those here, I dont know what car the paint is going on but if its something like a 78 lada then carry on ( oops that'll upset some folks )

I've used oil based paints on the chassis's used by kit cars and the like and it is perfectly ok but I personally wouldn't use it on a decent car body.

the point I was making is that jimmyfish might not be aware of the dangers involved in using 2 pack paint, I'm assuming that to be the case as he's asking about the ratio of paint to thinners when using cellulose which leads me to think he's not done a great deal of spraying cars, please correct me if i'm wrong on that point,

Eddie, you say you've got an oven which I assume is used after painting with 2 pack,
would you honestly recommend a non-professional uses 2 pack?

I wouldn't say 'nish' eddie just enough to avoid 2 pack, the reason being that I dont have a spray booth/oven with fume extraction system so I dont use it, by the look of things you do which I'm guessing means you're a professional paint sprayer who will know all about the precautions needed when using it.

Is celly that bad that the bin is the best place for it?

I'm sure that you must have used it at sometime in the past and got a good finish with it.

I'd love to as I'd really like to try out the 2 pack for myself, unfortunately I live 'oop north' and your workshop is quite a few miles away, I know its the preferred paint for guys like you but its purely from a safety point that I wont have a go, I've been told a few times that I'm over cautious about many things but I'd rather not take risks, If anything could go wrong then it would go wrong when I'm involved!

Pessimist? got it in one.

Another thing is that any spraying i have to do is done at home in my garage ( plenty large enough for spraying ) and I, like probably a few others have to consider my neighbours.

BTW whats the motor being painted?
