Delicate paint - recomend products please

Hello,

my old english white competition car has obviously been given a cheap blow-over in the past as is normal for a competition car. The paint is not particulary well attached - removing sponsors stickers or numbers sometimes pulls off a little bit of paint. Also the paint feels less smooth than other cars and seems to hold dirt in that it never looks really clean and gets dirty quickly. This is not helped by me keep putting greasy clothes and fingers all over it.

None of this has really bothered me (expect for the odd snotty remark from a marshal) but next month it is taking part in a charity event and people will be paying for rides. Since they will be paying (and other cars at the event include Maclarens and stuff) I think I ought to make it look its best.

So, what can I do to smarten it up? I was thinking some kind of super detergent / degreaser and one of those white polishes? T-cat might get it smooth but I'm not sure the paint is think enough!
