Mk2 Golf GTi - opinions on these 2??
Discussion
Following a thread I started a couple of months ago I'm now at a more serious stage of looking (though still trying to get is past the missus) and was after thoughts on the following 2 cars. Both have similar mileages and seem in very good condition and whilst I'm aware one is an 8v vs a 16v they otherwise both look really nice. However, there is a fair % difference in price and with any classic hatch there seems to be a massive variation in this regard that may or may not be reflective of condition. I really like the colour of the 8v (red) and both have some really good points. Also, how easy/cheap is it to change the keep fit windows to electric?
Anyhow, I'd appreciate any thoughts on these 2 including what you think of the process, possible negotiation etc;

Wouldn't pay £5k for a 5dr, 16v or not.
Ideally rot free, Recaro trim, electric windows and mirrors, PAS, 3dr 16v, and under 5k.
Also there is not alot of choice in the classifieds, best bet is get on the owners pages on Facebook, as the cars sell fast on there when they are well priced, or ebay.
Watch out for:
Rust. bottom of a-pillars on sunroof cars, rear valance, petrol filler cap, rear arches, front wings, floor bungs...
Also seen them rot from the top of the rear arch up into the car, fuel filler neck bracket also goes.
Clocking - easy peasy.
Obsolete parts - rain gutters is a big one, NLA and hard to find good ones.
Most things can be retrofitted but do you want to?

Seriously though, they both seem a heck of a lot of money for a "meh" humdrum car with lots of miles on the clock.
MK2 GTI's are awesome, and will cope with starship mileage if the rust is kept away.Light by modern standards, easy to fix, fun to throw about, and appreciating in value, whats not to like?

I don't hate them. I just don't see the appeal. Far too "white goods" for my tastes. And I'm sure they are appreciating, but that perplexes me even more.Light by modern standards, easy to fix, fun to throw about, and appreciating in value, whats not to like?
If they where £500-1800 then maybe. But when you start talking £4-5K+, then there are a heck of a lot more interesting cars to look at, rather than a washing machine on wheels.
Thanks all - Must admit I was a little unsure about 5k on a Golf, I do like the look of the red 8v though.
The small bumper on FB sounds interesting but I really do prefer the look of the big bumper.
As for it being a white goods car? Not really sure I follow, a standard golf maybe but the GTi? No way. Drive one for a while and you may see why.

big bumpers will come up for similar money, just keep an eye out.The small bumper on FB sounds interesting but I really do prefer the look of the big bumper.

I had a 5dr 8v small bumper for 4 years when it was about 5 years old (F reg, so this was in about 1995-1999), and while it was a cracking car (I never keep a car that long!), I agree with the comments here about £5k being way too much for what was a mass produced and mass sold very nice but very common car.The small bumper on FB sounds interesting but I really do prefer the look of the big bumper.

I have watched the prices over the years as I would still like another one day, but it's the sort of car that you should be able to pick up for £1-2k, and only pay a little more for a 3dr, 16v, big bumper with much less mileage and service history to prove the mileage. 16v even came with leather sometimes (a friend had one) so worth looking out for that.

Thank you again. I'm still really liking the red 8v but not the price. I may try and get along one weekend to see it (not in a desperate hurry) and see if cash in hand speaks anything, condition pending obviously, though given your comments would you say between 2.5 and 3 is more a fairer reflection of value for it than the 3.75 he's asking?
I'll give the 5k cars a wide berth, whilst I want decent I'm not after perfection.

It's just all dependent on what someone wants to pay really, once cars start to get older/rarer/considered classics.
I sold a 911, 3.2 carrera supersport, 8 years ago for £17k - it was 2 owners, 55k miles from new (22 years old). Could I have got more? Probably, maybe even £20k + if the right buyer came along, but I wanted it sold as needed the money, so didn't want to wait months. Now they go for £50k + for the same car, but hey ho!
Someone might pay him £3.7k for it, but it wouldn't be me, or you buy the sound of it. It would have to be less than £3k, but you will still hear of other people getting bargains at much less than that, however they probably spend half of their day on Autotrader etc, to dig out the deals!

Funny how times change. I loved my Mk 1 GTi (it was a Jetta called the GLi though) but I absolutely hated my Mk2 16 valve. I cannot see why, in a road-going version of a car, fifth gear is a direct top, not overdrive. Believe me, driving from Leicester to Gleneagles was a nightmare, the engine turning at 4000 rpm for 80 mph. I only kept it a short while from new and sold it to a friend who kept it as a fun car. That it was, but I can remember even to this day the relentless buzz of the engine above 70 mph. Very tiring.
