MK1 3 Litre Capris, How Many Survive ?
Discussion
I had a 3000 Ghia in 1980 and one night after a few pints of Pompey Royal bitter with the old man in Pulborough W Sussex, I was driving back down to my house in Chichester and driving through Duncton I came through the bends at the end of the village and then turned up Duncton Hill when these set of headlights turned on from a parked position in the road that also led onto Duncto Hill.
So I booted it up the hill and down through the bend towards Chichester,as I went through Halnaker village towards the A27 there were some Blue light flashing some way in front of me, so I slowed and stopped as they had put a road block up.
The Police officer at the time asked me what I was doing, and I said that I was just poodling down to my house in Chichester, and at that point a very Irate Policeman got out of his Rover 3500 behind me doing up his tie and started bawling at me, what the feck did I think I was doing and didn't I see the blue lights behind me,and what did I have under the bonnet as he had a rover 3.5 and he couldn't get a sniff of my tail.
I didn't say that if only you could drive my favourite road as well as I could then you would understand as at the time I thought better of it.
I used to love that run down from Duncton and all the twists and curves in that road.
It ended up in court with my Soliciter stating that I could not have been driving through Halnaker village at 75 - 80 mph as it was impossible, so I was done for doing 60mph in a 40mph limit, Oh what a lucky boy was I.
After that I had to sell my lovely Capri as I was followed a lot, not sure why though !

YES A.P. you are right re the Vinle roof option.....but ime confused even more now. ! It may be a replacement vinle ? But my mums 71 3000E in Tawny, had a Tobacco Vinle roof ime sure ?
Drove her a short distance today, my first time behind the wheel of a 3 litre since 1986, memories came flooding back, she caused a huge stir on the ind estate !!

If its an every day driver, go for a September 84 on Injection Special, 5 speed box gives better motorway economy, nice half leather recaro trim and an L.S.Diff as well and far nicer wheels.
Forget the Brooklands model, over priced and over rated.
HOWEVER.......if its Noise and SIDE WAYS FUN your After and the Investment factor, it just has to be a MK1 3 Litre. Sept 72 ( K Reg ) cars had 138 bhp and far better gear ratios,
GXLs ( L-Reg, Sept 72 onwards ) are slightly more desireable, nicer gear change,( gear lever goes direct into the box ) quad head lamps, rear Anti Roll bar ( which does nothing )nicer dash board. However, many had the Optional Steel Slideing Sunroof, these cars can rot more than non sun roof cars, due to the drain channels blocking. You will also pay a price premium for a GXL . Many were Autos, not a problem as a fairly easy conversion to manual and an Auto will probably had a far easier life.
Will you lot pack it in. All this talk of Mk1 Capri's has got me thinking very bad thoughts again. You made me spend 2 hours last night looking for the original factory brochures, scanning them, uploading them to image schack and then posting them onto the forum. You made me late for bed.Forget the Brooklands model, over priced and over rated.

Do not go 2.8 injection special. I bought a red one with grey interior. Mint car. The gear ratios where crap and the 2.8 engine does not have the torque of the 3 litre. One of the most dissapointing cars I have owned. On one occasion whilst travelling M11 onto M25 northbound a 2 litre Sierra left me for dead, under taking me on the inside. I had my foot on the boards in third and could not stay with him. Sold it soon after. Test drove a XR4X4 2.8i similarly gutless and then the 2.9i which behaves much like our beloved essex motor. A few months later I took it to turbo technics for their 225bhp twin turbo conversion. That went well and of course no badges

Roman Bronze was a late 70's early 80's colour (popular on MkIV Cortina Ghia's) so if it was Roman Bronze it was a respray.
Only brown shades for the Mk1 Capri was Tawny and Copper Bronze.
I will bow to your superior knowledge. This was my first car back in 1985. It was in a sorry state even back then. I did try to tidy it up a little and remember purchasing some roman bronze rattle cans to hide some of the (bad) filler I'd applied. Now you mention it the match wasn't exactly perfect , your post may explain why , happy days though. Only brown shades for the Mk1 Capri was Tawny and Copper Bronze.
In 1980/81 had a '72 MK1 3000E, yellow with black vinyl roof, registration 1300LJ.
I remember selling it to another young lad who was going to drive it to Greece ...
Still shows up on RAC data check as being on that vehicle - I wonder if it still lives ?

Wonder how we could find out where it is now ?
A Daytona Yellow 3000E wasnt from my 3 Litre Capri Memory a very common colour choice.
Got a bit more info from a VRM checker ...A Daytona Yellow 3000E wasnt from my 3 Litre Capri Memory a very common colour choice.

Is there a free VRM checker where one can type in a reg number and get all the above details on the car, including chassis number? The DVLA checker gives only limited information.

Razetter, i had a Saphire Blue 3000E , KMK-845K, blue interior, manual, i fitted twin Cibie Oscars to it.Spax on the rear, lowered at the front.
I rescued her from a front garden in Loughton, where she had sat for about a year. Owned her about 1983, i swapped her for a respray with an aqaintance on my TR6 , but he didnt finish my TR . He sold her to a guy who worked in a Tyre Place in Forrest Gate. Sadly she was stolen from the tyre place and never seen again. Was a great car

This is one of the very rare 4WD Rally Capri's which has been sat in a garage for over 25 years. I was priveliged to get a peek at it today as it has just been dropped off for restoration after all that time.
Looks like the Driver seat must have been interesting (its not in the car) as there is a large bulge in the floor above the transfer box.
There are also a few battle scars - it is wearing old, narrow and chunky rally tyres which must have peppered the bodywork and looks like the underside has came into contact with some large rocks in its time.
At some point it got painted in the colours in the pic which are not original, however if I understand right, in 3 or 4 months it will be looking like its old self.
I'm cheekily hoping to get a peek at the work in progress and if I can time a visit right maybe get a pic of the finished article.

Yeah - So much so I'm wary of saying where it is despite it being locked behind a stout gate. There is no interior whatsoever in it - inside it is just a black painted shell (with the odd hole .... one looks like something has pushed a small hole through which has got to have happened "in action".
Tyres are like nothing I've seen before.
I think I'll be visiting in a couple of months to have a look - had Capris in the '90s and looking at getting another in a year or so - don't think this one will be within reach though. I remember reading about them in the Capri Club International magazines when I was a member. If its anything like other cars I've seen built by the chap who is doing it it will be top notch.

After what i beleive to be around 20 years, 3000E , RWC-399K , Nicki Lauda and Bill Stones old May 28th 1972, Brands Hatch/FordSports Day Warriors tired Springs and shocks are no doubt groaning under the weight of the 3 Litre V-6 Lump that i fitted to her on sunday.
Not had her running yet and a long way to go, inc a body rebuild, lack of cash etc before she returns to Brands for a Magazine feature. May 28TH 2012 is the Target Date.

It had been working fine for the past 6 months. Do you know why it doesn't work now? Is there an alternative site where one can type in a reg number and get the chassis number?
