They go for a fortune now as well - a restored one etc. Preferred the purpley maroon one to the yellow ones - but my AP50 would beat the fizzie into a cocked hat so to speak ... !

Especially down Cumnor Hill going into Oxford ...

Yes, they do, mine was Purple as well, bought it somewhere I'n Sth London, didn't have it long. My forst Moped at 16 was a Fantic GT, in blue, had a head on wirh an Austin 1100 in Chingford late one nite, but repaired it, then some scum nicked it from the garage.
Replaced it with my first Fizzy, VYF 15M, must have been one of the first FS1Es, after the Gold SS. Fitted an Alspeed Pipe, was a great bike .
I sold it I'n July 78, for £150 via MCN, how I wish I still had it.!!!

This is one of the very rare 4WD Rally Capri's which has been sat in a garage for over 25 years. I was priveliged to get a peek at it today as it has just been dropped off for restoration after all that time.

Looks like the Driver seat must have been interesting (its not in the car) as there is a large bulge in the floor above the transfer box.

There are also a few battle scars - it is wearing old, narrow and chunky rally tyres which must have peppered the bodywork and looks like the underside has came into contact with some large rocks in its time.

At some point it got painted in the colours in the pic which are not original, however if I understand right, in 3 or 4 months it will be looking like its old self.

I'm cheekily hoping to get a peek at the work in progress and if I can time a visit right maybe get a pic of the finished article.

Any news on this 4x4 rallycross Capri being brought back to life?

Haha those were the days. My first moped at age 16 was a purple Puch Maxi S (with rear suspension you know). Then a metallic red R plate FS1E. Was not that much quicker in reality. Used to knock around with two guys another Graham with an AP50 and another with a SS50 with 70cc Barrel and Piston. Fairly evenly matched from memory but it was a long time ago. My sister 3 and a half years younger had a yellow FS1EDX with front disc brake.
Here's me aged 18 in 1979 MK1 Facelift 3000GXL. Those days were fun. No money but somehow life seemed much simpler. All I worried about was money for juice, tax and insurance once a year.
The big 50 this year

Yes, Those were the days !! I remember riding down through Chingfrord one eve on my Fantic GT amongst a group of at least 15 Fizzys, AP 50s, Fantic GTs, Cabaleros, etc. What a sight that was .
One of that gang shortly after whilst eyeing up some girls at a bus stop to his left , ran into the back of an MGB GT that had stopped at traffic lights and went head first through the rear window, fortunately he wasn't seriously hurt !!

Anyone remember " Quick Snacks " at Whipps Cross ? This was a burger stand opposite the Hospital, good job it was !!! Could write a book re that place. Some real " Characters " shall we say used to frequent it , Fri and Sat nights were best.
A guy used to go there I'n a blue V12 Etype Coupe, complete with bent n/s front suspension, caused whilst hitting a kerb racing a Porshe Turbo. I well remember one eve him repeatedly racing a pal on an RD400E Yamaha and the black lines he left I'n the road and the Yam on it's back wheel for a long way!!

Mine was the pie stand in Harrow. Again yes lots of characters. I sold the Capri to a school mate. He did not keep it long. Got fed up with being stopped by the police. I don't know around your way but cars used to get marked for being tugged. I never drank back then. The deal with the mates was I'll drive and buy the juice you just keep the coca cola coming.
As an aside the best tug I ever got that I will never forget was by an unmarked Triumph Dolomite, Mexico Brown. Three big blokes plain clothes got out, driver still in car with engine running. Checked the Capri over, my license, mot and insurance which I always carried, can't thing why whistle. No aggro and sent me on my way. Thank you officers, you've got a bloody Rover V8 in that haven't you. (V8 burble unmistakeable). The reply, mind your own business and bugger off before we change our minds about knicking you for speeding.
The guy with the SS50 (70cc barrel and piston) had a white Rover V8 P6 auto back then. Bloody good driver. Drifting, nothing new, He could drift that motor around roundabouts four up no problem. Ex Karter. Bloody nightmare. Quite often in the evening whilst minding my own business he'd come flying up behind me, lights flashing, number plate scraping the gound. Here we go again, pull over and then Richard flys past gesticulating out of the window. Lost count how many times he mugged me with that one. Happy days smile

Sadly, despite my intentions, I've not been able to get back over to the East of Scotland to pop in.

I expect to see the guy restoring it next week though (I will either be at the garage on Monday - but failing that I'll see him at a car show at Stafford next Saturday).

If he's finished the car and its gone back to its owner, I'll see if he can email me some photos.

Re that Pie stand I'n Harrow, East London and Essex were my haunts , but I beleive Quick Snacks was well known.
Re plod tugging certain cars, yes, sure that went on .
I had shall we say A dice late one night , I'n my 3 rd 3 Litre Capri ( a 3000E ) with a guy I'n a 3 Litre GXL, he tried to overtake me by using the n/s pavement, past plod I'n a Triumph 2.5 PI, they were not amused !!!
We both got a ticking off , then sent on our way . We then parked up and i had a long chat re 3 Litre Capris with him.
Those were the days. More fun , at slower speeds. Cars are just too fast now.

You must have come across a mate Mark. He lived in Loughton. He was into his cars and also 50 this year. He had a Mk1 3 litre Capri in Black and a Mk11 in Silver, I never knew him back then though. Fast for their day and taught you how to drive or we would not be having this conversation smile.
Agreed nowadays it is about having fun at sensible speed. Hence looking at this branch of PH. The second but last car I sold 2 years ago had to go or I was going to get into serious troble. It was a 911, bog standard would pull a tonne in 7 and 60-130 in 7. Not for me anymore, at least not on the road anyway beer

Thanks for sharing the pics.
I'm from the same generation. 16 years old Suzi AP 50, then 17 yrs Yamaha RD 250 E.
Then the 3Ltr Capri, then started dating and sold the car for a cheaper one to buy my first house
The sad thing not one picture of any of them.

Have dug through some very old photo albums. I know the first two are round the wrong way but if I adjust them the quality goes. Note socket set, back then I could actually fix my own cars.

Cannot believe I never took any of the XJ6 dash. You can probably make out the centre console with the electric window switches in it. Also came with a Janspeed exhaust, twin pipes each side. Appliance mags I think. Note dead locks on doors. They worked. A few times I came back to the car and the door catches were open. Thankfully never damaged.

p.s. Kerry the missus sitting on the bonnet of a Series 3 4.2 which I bought from a very good friends father. I also had his Series 2 prior. Must be 28 years ago.

I went into business with Gary, Kerry's brother. I sold the Capri to help fund the purchase of new Merecedes 207D van. That was my run around for a few years. Can't remember what I got for it.

Ah what memories, when launched it looked better than other cars by far.
My first father in law had a 1300!
I had a 2000 GTXLR with a nasty V4 lump in 74.
Then in the late 70's a friend had a 3000 GT and it flew!
It beat my TR5 and I set about making the TR faster by getting the pi right etc and beat his GT.........it was war with your mates cars in those days LOL.
My final fling with these tail happy creations was a bright yellow AVO RS3100 in which I competed in the 1982 Birkett 6 hour relay race at Silverstone.
The wife was watching with our new born little girl Rebecca.............who now drives and writes about cars and charged round Silverstone as a passenger with Alan McNish in the Lemans Audi just two weeks ago!
She was born to be fast.

These bring back some memories. Had a few when i first started my driving career! J reg Ford red 3000gt. A white 3000gxl With the biggest webasto i could get in it. Another ford red 3000gt with nitrous added (used to leave the new 2.8i standing at the lights lol) unbelievable power at the time. A marine blue rs3100 and an olympic blue rs3100 most recently, just didnt seem the same driving that around as all the others. They were far more fun
