These are my dad's mates (he's taking the picture). They went all over Europe in the Moggie Minor, which was unusual in those days. In France, the French climbed all over the car and shook their hands wherever they went!

Wow That's bonkers!

I have the book right here, Illustrated Motorcars of the World published by Collins (C.1957 at a guess as the last cars it this edition are MY'56) with a forward by Jack Brabbham no less, with around a 1000 of those pictures in! It must have been a hell of a project to produce!

The first (actually the bottom right but first I noticed and the first to appear in the book me being a dopey git again) you have put up is the Pierce Stanhope "Two seat Doctor's Car of 1905.

This was my Dad's brand new Mk3 Ford Cortina GT. There was an 18 month waiting list! My Mum is in the passenger seat, and you can just make out me and my brother in the back.

This had me going, but I think it is an Austin Heavy 12-4 drop head coupe with dickey seat from around 1927/28 (the later cars had a squared off bonnets). I say 'think' because although so many elements scream Austin Heavy, the doors don't seem quite right.

My grand parents had the book . . . I last saw it in the early 80s.

Lamborghini Espada, Bourne End sometime before 1979 (I know cos my 1300E Escort died in 1979 and it is in one of the pics)

He said it belonged to Paul McCartney before he had it.

Not to me mate. Don't know how old you are but I was around then and BMW was just a car in my eyes. Perhaps they've gained cachet with age but at the time, comparing like with like, a 1.8 BMW 3 series was just another rep's car.
I was born in 1976. Are you honestly telling me that a late 80s Cavalier SRi bore comparison with a contemporary 318is? Horses for courses I guess, but there's a reason that BMW/Merc were able to charge such massive premiums IMHO.

The build quality and performance were in a different league. You don't see so many Fords and Vauxhalls about now from that era do you? They have all long since gone to the great British car plant in the sky...

There's a reason for that.

Not really Joel, in '76 people in my company were chosing between Capris, BMWs, SAABs and stuff off the company car list, nothing special. Mercs were old mans cars and taxis, no one had them.

Fair enough Rich, I was really talking about my perceptions as a car-obssessed 8-14 yr old in the 1980s. Clearly I don't have much of a view on 1970s motoring as I was too young :-) Plus taking the opportunity to vent a possibly controversial opinion that most British output of that time was nothing short of dire.

An honourable exception for the MG Maestro 2.0 EFi which for some reason my mum had (too quick for her surely, did the salesman trick them into ordering it?). Wasn't as good as Dad's Mk1 Golf GTI though.

more special than Minis ect. you must have been selling photocopiers or double glazing - course I did get my license until '77, then had a 15+ year old Wolesley 1500, for about three weeks

nothing special to photocopier and double glazing sales people - and software devlopers/sales - I was still learning/forgetting slot card(?) and ticker tape(? can't remember proper names now) and main frame computers in '78

Does anyone have any Earls Court Motor Show pictures from the 1970's, especially of the green Lamborghini Countach that made its UK debut at the 1973 motor show. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Mum and Dad got some of their Cine footage converted to DVD. There is a fair bit of motoring content, mostly Kart racing and static shots of dads various motors but I thought this was interesting.

Graham Hill doing a demo drive in a Lotus 49 at some race meeting. Not sure where or what year (68-70 probably) if anyone can ID the place that would be great.

If you are interested in the Karting let me know and I'll post it up.
